Just one day after Bolles School Sharks’ rising star Caeleb Dressel shattered Ian Crocker’s 200 meter freestyle record by going a 1:48.64, he knocked another sprint record out of the books with a blistering 22.39 this morning in the 50 meter freestyle prelims at the Junior National Championships in Irvine, CA. By doing so, Dressel bettered his own 22.59 standard that had been established at the 2013 TYR BSS Summer Classic back in June.
Dressel’s time is impressive not only from an American perspective, but also when compared with the times that some of the world’s best sprinters today posted when they were just 16 years old. For example, if we take the top 2 finishers from the 2013 FINA World Championships in the 50 meter freestyle, and take a look at their best times when they were 16, we find that Dressel has already surpassed them both.
Cesar Cielo’s best 50 LCM Free at age 16: 23.29 (this Brazilian age group record has since been broken)
Vladimir Morozov’s best 50 LCM Free at age 16: 22.44

Dressel still has an opportunity to improve on his swim tonight in finals. He will be pushed by fellow teammate and future USC Trojan, Santo Condorelli (22.88), as well as future Michigan Wolverine, Paul Powers (22.99), from Splash Aquatic Club in Georgia. Also, Caeleb will also surely have his sights on the 22.13 meet record that Morozov established in 2010 (coincidentally also in Irvine).
Ledecky is fortunate enough to come from a very wealthy family – the incremental value/cost to her of a couple million dollars of lost income is not nearly as great as it is for many others – she may well swim college just for the experience – something money can’t buy, and the experiences of being on a college team is one of those.
Probably, not as wealthy as the family of Dara Torres , I think her dad was a Hotel magnet and they live in Beverly Hills. In fact a lot of Nation’s Capital, Bay Area and Orange County teams have to be at least in the upper-middle class range to afford the houses in their area.… Read more »

People should calm down a little and wait to see if by 18 20 years old he will still be a factor.. being much taller and stronger than the other kids really helps.. it is not like his tech is astounding.. there are many smaller kids than him at same age who swim nearly identical times and did not grew much yet..
Agreed, comparing 14yr olds is pointless, at 14 I struggled to compete against much larger kids, at 19 it was a completely different story and a lot of those kids who performed so well were long gone. Time will tell.

CMartin not very logical or smart regarding Missy Franklin’s decision to turn pro. AWswimfan is right on. Missy already turned down at least $2,000,000 in endorsements from the London games. She should have used a small percentage of that money to educate herself anywhere, train, and watch any collegiate teams from the stands.
Don’t play with fire, you never know when you get injured (perhaps achilles…) or peak. Once your looks fade, money disappears also. In the meantime smash the TROJANS!
I was simply explaining the reasons why SHE wants to swim in college and not turn pro for another two years. Not my opinions. Though they do seem very logical to me.
Also, I do believe I mentioned the potential for injury quite a bit in my comments, something you may have overlooked.

It was also a new 15-16 NAG record by 5 seconds or so.
Alex Katz wins 800 – 8:04.77. Liam Egan second in final heat, buts gets fourth overall with a 8:08.52. Aidan Burns second with a 8:05.35, dropping 12 seconds from his seed time. Rounding out the top three is Chris Weiser, with a 8:06.68, dropping 14 seconds from his seed time.
