Caeleb Dressel 50 Freestyle Junior Worlds – Post Race Video Interview

Video interview captured by swimswam reporter Colin Blair.

Men’s 50 freestyle – 2013 FINA Junior World Championships / Dressel NAG Record  – as reported by swimswam:

American Caeleb Dressel, swimming in the final of the boys’ 50 free at the 2013 FINA World Junior Championships in Dubai, has broken his first National Age Group Record as a 17-18, within two weeks of aging up into the group.

Dressel swam a 22.22 to place 3rd in the final and break one-tenth of a second off of the record held by his Bolles teammate Santo Condorelli two weeks ago in 22.32 at Junior Nationals.

Note that Dressel briefly held the standard as the fastest 18 & under American Junior when he swam a 22.39 at Junior Nationals to break the 15-16, and existing 17-18, records (Shayne Fleming, 22.47).

Dressel now holds both the 15-16 and 17-18 National Age Group Records in long course meters, plus the 50 yard record for 15-16′s.

Men’s 50 Free – FINAL – as reported by Braden Keith, swimswam editor-in-chief.

Luke Percy from Australia was the most consistently-fast among the big players in this men’s 50 free final, and swimming out of the center lane he took the win in 22.14 (.03 shy of his time from the semis).

He, Russia’s Evgeny Sedov, and American Caeleb Dressel were all nose-and-nose from block to touch, and Sedov would come up 2nd in 22.19 and Dressel 3rd in 22.22. (Read about Dressel’s record-breaking swim here.)

Brazil’s Guilherme O’Campo had a big breakout in the final, dropping more than three-tenths of a second to touch 4th in 22.48: a new Brazilian Record for 17-year olds.

American Paul Powers was 5th in 22.53, followed by Poland’s Jan Holub in 22.69, Ukraine’s Bogdan Plavin in 22.74, and Suriname’s  in 23.00. Tjon-a-Joe’s 22.75 from the semi-finals made him the first swimmer in the history of his country under 23 seconds.

This kid is great at interviews and has a great outlook on the sport. Definitely one of the most likeable personalities for a swimmer of his caliber.

Congratulations Caeleb on a great summer season!! You have so much to be proud of this year. Your hard work has paid off. I am glad you are not worried about that time or that race, your time will come soon. You are a great role model for other young swimmers. You are a long way from home for a first international meet, so to be in a final is awesome let alone top 3. Good luck for the rest of the meet. Keep up the great work with coach Jason this year, he will get you many more goals. I can’t wait to see where you choose to go to school. (Hoosier’s!! just sayin’)

I know your family and… Read more »
