There was no question about this race from 15 meters onward. Caeleb Dressel has the best burst in swimming, and he showed it, going out in 19.99 and finishing in 42.80 to become the first man ever under 43. That’s the second major barrier he’s broken this week, and he gets a chance at #3 tomorrow in the 100 free.
It was a massive event for Florida, with Jan Switkowski taking 2nd overall in a Gator-chomped 1-2. Indiana’s Vini Lanza was third in 44.50, and two-time event champ and Olympic champ Joseph Schooling was relegated to just 4th in a field where an astounding six men broke 45.
NC State’s Ryan Held finished 5th in 44.88, and Cal’s stellar freshman Ryan Hoffer came through in sixth, going 44.93 from an outside lane. His teammates Justin Lynch and Matthew Josa rounded out the A heat.
NC State’s Coleman Stewart came through with a big B final win, going 44.84 to finish 9th overall.
Cal remains in the lead, now expanding that to 16.5 points. Florida is second at 200, with NC State (194) sitting third, Texas 4th (186) and Indiana 5th (185).

…he was talking to a bunch of kids right before the race? That’s prolly the coolest thing I think he’s done all weekend.
How can you not just completely adore this man. His ability to stay totally normal and humble, whilst tearing up the swimming world just kills me. Talk about a role model, not just for kids but for all of us. Sorry America, we are all adopting him as our own.

You missed some of the best parts of the interview, like where he was called the best flyer in Florida history and he corrected the interviewer and said that is Anthony Nesty and that the pressure he was under and how he won the first gold ever for Suriname surpasses anything he’s done. Or when he was asked how it felt to see Finnerty dip below 50 in the 100 breast, how he said it was awesome and he was happy for him to get it because “I just do pullouts.”
The kid is just so humble.

I don’t want to be a downer but…. isnt there a limit on Caffeine in the NCAA? I don’t know exactly what preworkout does but I think there is a ton of caffeine in there.
I think it mostly depends on the type of preworkout used. If it was provided by the team, which I assume it was, I’m sure they made sure it was one without caffeine
Yeah…he was forward enough about it that I think he had to know it was okay. Still though. Made it sound like he got jacked up on caffeine.
I think at this point it’s pretty much guarunteed he’s getting tested at this meet and they check for caffeine levels. If he did take a prohibited amount, which I highly doubt, he would get caught.
So THAT explains the 42 100 fly. If only the other guys had known. smh
It’s the taurine content in the preworkout which is a banned NCAA substance I believe. Same thing as in a 5 hour energy.
Taurine is not on the banned list. And the amount of caffeine he’d have to ingest to test positive (and the test would have to happen almost immediately) for would be extremely off-the-charts.
