Women’s Swimmer of the Week

Megan Burns, Buffalo, Freshman

Megan Burns stayed perfect on the season by winning the 50 and 100 freestyle events against McMaster on Saturday. Burns won the 50 free in a time of 24.07. She won the 100 freestyle in a time of 52.28. Burns was also a part of a pair of relay victories, winning the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Andrew Henry, Eastern Michigan, Junior

Event & Time:
1. 100 free:  45.97
1. 200 free:  1:38.83
1. 400 free relay (Akron):  3:03.16

Eastern Michigan University junior Andrew Henry was a key factor in the Eagles’ 153.5-144.5 victory over Oakland University, Nov. 8.  Henry won two individual events, and also swam the third leg of the winning 400 free relay team that clinched the win in a down-to-the wire end race.  Henry first won the 200 free in 1:38.83, a time that ranks atop the MAC standings for the 2014-15 season.  He went on to win the 100 free in 45.97 seconds, good for the fifth-fastest time in the conference.  The Eagles then edged out Oakland by .55 seconds in the 400 free relay to secure a victory, as the winning team score was a toss-up throughout the entirety of the meet.  The relay team’s time of 3:03.16 is also the second-best time in the MAC for the season.

Jordan VanWinkle, Ball State, Senior

Event & Time:
First place finish: 200 medley relay, 1:51.91 with teammates freshman Andrea Richter, junior Sydney Harris and sophomore Katie Horn.
First place finish: 200 IM, 2:11.09
First place finish: 200 Breaststroke, 2:31.60

Senior Jordan VanWinkle led the Cardinals with three first place finishes at Ball State’s first co-ed event at Eastern Illinois. VanWinkle set two new season best times in her individual events with the 200 breaststroke at 2:31.60 and in the 200 IM with her 2:11.09 finish. Ball State women’s swimming and diving ultimately swept two events and defeated Eastern Illinois 165-97.

Holly Schuster, Miami, Freshman

Event & Time:
1st- 100-yard Butterfly (57.95)
Exhibition (2nd) – 800-yard Freestyle Relay (7:53.74)
Exhibition (3rd) – 100-yard Backstroke (58.79)
Exhibition (4th) – 200-yard Medley Relay (1:50.82)

Freshman Holly Schuster could have racked up a ton of points Saturday against Butler if her races were not changed to exhibition. She ended up taking first place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.95, almost two seconds ahead of the second-place Butler finisher. She swam in three exhibition races, two of which were relays. Her 800-yard freestyle relay technically came in second, clocking in at 7:53.74, which was 33.2 seconds faster than the fastest Butler relay team. The other relay she swam in was the 200-yard medley relay, who technically came in fourth with a 1:50.82, nearly 3.5 seconds faster than the fastest Butler relay team. The last race Holly swam in was the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 58.79 seconds. This time was 4.5 seconds faster than the fastest Butler swimmer of the race.

Grace Van Allen, Eastern Michigan, Sophomore

Event & Time:
1. 200 free:  1:52.13
1. 500 free:  5:02.33
3. 400 free relay:  3:30.35

Eastern Michigan University sophomore Grace Van Allen picked up wins in the 200 and 500 free over both Oakland University and Bowling Green State University, Nov. 8.  In the 200 free, Van Allen edged out teammate Becca Detro in 1:52.13 to lead a sweep of the event over both the Golden Grizzlies and the Falcons.  Her time ranks second in the MAC behind an earlier performance from Detro.  She went on to win the 500 free in 5:02.33, a mark which would be good for the top spot in the MAC were it not already held by Van Allen in a previous race.  The sophomore then swam a leg of the 400 free relay team that touched in at 3:30.35, finishing third overall and second to both Oakland and Bowling Green.

Brooke Edwards, Toledo, Junior

Junior Brooke Edwards recorded two wins for the Midnight Blue & Gold this weekend in its dual meet at Michigan State.

Edwards posted a time of 1:53.26 in the 200-yard freestyle and a 52.13 in the 100-yard freestyle against the Spartans in her two individual victories.

It was her second-consecutive meet with at least on win.

Edwards also swam the final leg of the 200-yard medley relay that finished runner-up for the Rockets.

Kegan Skelton, SIU, Senior

Results:

One-Meter Dive: 1st vs Kentucky, 2nd vs Missouri, 2nd vs Northwestern- Score: 290.80
Three-Meter Dive: 1st vs Kentucky, 1st vs Missouri, 1st vs Northwestern- Score: 394.05

Kegan Skelton put on an outstanding performance for the Salukis this past weekend. Facing some of the best competition so far this season, Skelton showed his diving prowess. In the three-meter dive, Skelton earned a score of 394.05 to earn win the event overall, while also taking first place in the duals against Kentucky, Missouri, and Northwestern. Skelton was also successful in the one-meter dive, carding a score of 290.80, which earned him a first place finish in the dual against Kentucky, and a pair of second place finishes against Missouri and Northwestern.

Scott Huang, Buffalo, Sophomore

Scott Huang won two individual events and was a part of a winning relay team in Buffalo’s victory over McMaster on Saturday. Huang won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 57.47. He also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.58. Huang swam the breaststroke leg of UB’s victorious 200 medley relay team.
