Buffalo Hires Former Penn State Assistant Mahaney

The University of Buffalo (SUNY – Buffalo) has hired former Penn State assistant Aaron Mahaney as a new assistant coach.

Buffalo is a rising mid-major program that makes their second major headline-grabbing move this summer, after announcing that former North-Carolina All-American Dan O’Connor would be transferring there.

Mahaney, was an assistant at Penn State for five years, finished his final practice at Penn State. Prior to his time with the Nittany Lions, he was an assistant at Hawaii during their heyday in the mid-2000’s where they were a top-25 team at the NCAA Championships.

He also spent a season as an intramural coach at Georgia after graduation from Michigan State.

He primarily has trained the “workhorse” group in the past: the distance freestyles, IM’ers, and butterfliers; that likely means he’ll get an opportunity to work with O’Connor as the latter tries to revive his career a little bit in 2014.

There should be many coaching announcements in the next week, as July 1st is the standard turnover time for contracts.
