LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women’s swimming & diving team topped Johns Hopkins, 174-120, on Friday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium.
Bolstered by 11 individual event wins and three 1-2-3 performances, the Bison (7-1, 5-1 Patriot League) rang in the New Year with a commanding victory over the Blue Jays (5-4). This is the second-straight year they raced out to a 7-1 record through their first eight duals meets; with three remaining, they need just one win to match their 2018-19 record of 8-1.
Catherine Craig and Emma Hadley led the way against Johns Hopkins, each winning two events. Craig swept the breaststroke races while Hadley won both backstroke events.
Alexis Faria (100 butterfly), Maddie Hartigan (1,000 freestyle), Abby Merriman (200 freestyle), Sabrina Vumbacco (500 freestyle) and Maggie Wyngowski (200 IM) also won swimming events. Sophia Donati and Emily Gorham finished right behind Merriman in the 200 freestyle to account for one of Bucknell’s 1-2-3 efforts.
The Bison also went 1-2-3 on both boards, with Alaina Schumann winning on the 1-meter and Jamilie Atiyeh on the 3-meter. Schumann went second to Atiyeh on the 3-meter.
Bucknell returns to action tomorrow at 6 p.m. by hosting Army West Point. The dual meet, which was originally scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Black Knights’ Crandall Pool, was moved to the Bison’s Kinney Natatorium on Friday morning.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men’s swimming & diving team was edged by Johns Hopkins, 158-133, on Friday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium.
The Bison (5-3, 4-2 Patriot League) had five individual event winners. In addition, the 200 freestyle relay squad of Leo Kuyl, Jack Rose, Matt McGoey and Matt Mills raced to a first-place finish.
Notably, Kuyl (50 freestyle), Rose (100 backstroke) and McGoey (200 IM) were among Bucknell’s individual victors. The others were divers Nick Pirone (1-meter) and Garrett Sommer (3-meter).
The Bison swept the 1-meter board, with Sommer and Will Cadwallader finishing right behind Pirone.
The Blue Jays are a nationally ranked Division III program that finished fourth at the NCAA Division III Championships four of the past five seasons. This was the second meeting between Bucknell and Johns Hopkins. A season ago, the Blue Jays scored a 174-114 victory over the Bison at Kinney Natatorium.

Youth Shall Be Served
• The nine individual victories for Johns Hopkins all came from non-seniors with one by a junior and four each by sophomores and freshmen.
Double-Timing
• Freshman Kyle Wu was a double-winner for the Blue Jays against the Bison as he won the 200 free (1:41.70) and the 200 breast (2:04.91).
• Joining Wu as a double-winning freshman for the Blue Jays was Tristan Lin, who touched home first in the 100 breast (56.20) and 100 fly (50.56).
Other Winners
• In addition to the double-winners, the Blue Jays also grabbed first-place finishes in the 1000 free (CJ Arena – 9:44.67), 200 fly (Jeffrey Vitek – 1:52.52), 100 free (Noah Corbitt – 46.37), 200 back (Dylan Wachenfeld – 1:51.65) and 500 free (Collin Hughes – 4:40.19).
First and Second in the Relays
• The meet featured a pair of relays, the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay. The Blue Jays were first in the medley and second in the free to grab 15 crucial team points.
• The 200 medley relay team of Wachenfield, Maxwell Chen, Vitek and Nat Davenport got the meet started off well for the Blue Jays as they edged the top team from Bucknell by 0:22 with a time of 1:33.38.
• The free relay team of Davenport, Spencer Ryan, Hughes and Corbitt narrowly missed giving the Blue Jays a relay sweep as their time of 1:25.36 was just 0:18 off Bucknell’s winning time.
Depth the Key
• In topping the Bison for the second consecutive year, the Blue Jays not only showcased their youth, but also their depth.
• The Blue Jays went 1-2-3 in the 200 free (Wu, Hughes, Mitchell Simmons), 1-2 in the 100 breast (Lin, Marcelo Lauzurique), 1-3 in the 200 fly (Vitek, Matt Garza) , 2-3 in the 50 free (Davenport, Chen), 1-3 in the 100 free (Corbitt, Davenport), 1-3 in the 200 breast (Wu, Brandon Stride), 1-3 in the 500 free (Hughes, Simmons) and 1-2 in the 100 fly (Lin, Vitek).

A Relay Sweep
• The Blue Jays won both relays contested in the meet with first-place finishes in the 200 medley and 200 free relays.
• In the meet-opening medley relay, the team of Cecilia Cortez, Sonia Lin, Michelle Wang and Kiki Petersen clocked in at 1:45.48 to edge the top team from Bucknell by just 0:13.
• In the free relay, the Blue Jays had a bit more breathing room down the stretch as Alison Shapiro, Mikayla Bisignani, Kristen Alicea-Jorgensen and Petersen finished in 1:36.38 while Bucknell’s top team was more than a second behind at 1:37.75.
A Sweep for Petersen
• In addition to swimming the anchor leg on the two winning relay teams, Petersen also picked up a pair of first-place finishes of her own as she won the 50 free (23.89) and the 100 free (51.34).
One-Two
• In addition to Petersen’s efforts, the Blue Jays also got a first-place finish in the 200 fly from senior Michelle Wang, who clocked in at 2:05.05. Wang narrowly edged teammate Emerson Davis, who finished second in the event with a time of 2:05.33 to give the Blue Jays a 1-2 finish.
Other Strong Finishes
• The Blue Jays got a runner-up finish in the 1000 free from Elaine Limpkin (10:25.31), went 2-3-4 in the 100 back (Sydney Okubo (57.53), Cortez (57.57) and Renee Liu (58.49)) and earned second-place finishes from Sonia Lin in the 100 breast (1:06.67), Okubo in the 200 back (2:04.87), Lin in the 200 breast (2:25.97), and Wang in the 100 fly (57.38) and the 200 IM (2:06.46).
