14-year-old Brooke Zettel won a pair of events back-to-back to cap off the final night of Nashville’s Futures meet.
Zettel, who swims for the TAC Titans, started with a 2:18.09 win in the 200 backstroke, beating the field by 1.2 seconds. Later on, Zettel would go 2:19.98 to win the 200 IM. That time checks in at #70 all-time in the 13-14 age group. Her 200 back time is just a tenth outside of cracking the top 100 all-time in the age bracket.
It was a great night for youth on the girls side. 15-year-old Andrea Santander won the 100 free, going 57.22 for Pine Crest. And in the 1500 free, another 15-year-old got the win – Elise Bauer out of Marlins Swimming went 17:00.46, a 30-second drop from seed.
The boys 800 was a great race between heats, with Ilia Sibirsev nipping Alfonso Mestre by just a tenth at the final tally of times. Fast Lane’s Sibirsev topped Clearwater’s Mestre 8:22.39 to 8:22.47.
The next two boys races were also tight finishes. Nolan Briggs of Byron Center won the 100 free in 51.40, taking the title by just two tenths. Then Tampa Bay Aquatics’ Joseph Licht won the 200 back by just two tenths in 2:05.28. The biggest “blowout” of the night was just a three tenths margin in the 200 IM, where Georgia Coastal’s Dillon Hall won in 2:07.85.
The men’s 800 free was a great race, but not between Sibirsev and Mestre. Sibirsev put up his time in the early heats, in heat one (being seeded with a bonus cut). Mestre, Cole Forbes, and John Yambor-Maul had a great race in the 800 in finals, but didn’t top Sibirsev’s time.
