After winning the 400 free in a new national record on the opening night of the trials, Etobicoke’s Brittany Maclean got another tonight in the 200 free, touching in 1:56.94 for the win.
Maclean takes out the previous national record of 1:56.97 set by Genevieve Saumur in 2009. Maclean improves her personal best of 1:57.20 which she set in 2014 at the Commonwealth Games.
Maclean was very conservative the opening 50, but accelerated throughout the race, closing in a swift 29.75 to secure the win and the record. Maclean won the NCAA title in this event a few weeks ago.
15 year-old Penny Oleksiak also qualifies for Rio in this event, touching 2nd in 1:57.59, under the standard of 1:58.96. Also qualifying for the relay will be Katerine Savard (1:58.17) and Kennedy Goss (1:58.26).
Canadian Olympic medalists from 84′ Sandy Goss and Alex Baumann both had kids who made the Olympic team on the same night. That must be a first.
