Brendan Burns Achieves Second Perfect YNats Meet In His Career

2019 YMCA SHORT COURSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

For the second time in his Upper Main Line YMCA career, Brendan Burns achieved a perfect YMCA National meet winning all 4 of his individual events. The IU-commit sealed the deal tonight with his fourth win and YMCA national record in the 200 fly, defending his title and crushing his own mark with a 1:42.22. His winning time is a personal best by one one-hundredth and remains the 11th-fastest performer in the 17-18 age group. His 200 fly win is now joined by his previous record-breaking wins in the 100 fly, 200 free, and 200 IM.

Burns was not the only swimmer to score a perfect meet. 17-year-old Paige Hetrick of Bradford YMCA sealed her own 4-for-4 meet with her win in the 100 free (49.13). The future Louisville Cardinal also won the 200 free and swept the backstroke events during the 5-day meet.

The third swimmer of the meet to achieve a perfect meet was Sarasota YMCA’s Emma Weyant, who took home wins in the 1000 free (9:39.41), 400 IM (4:07.53), 500 free (4:43.80), and 200 IM (1:59.25).

Another highlight of the meet came from Somerset Hills YMCA’s Jack Alexy in the 100 free. Not only did Alexy defend his 2018 title, but his winning time of 43.07 took down Olympic gold medalist Ryan Held’s 2014 mark of 43.31. Alexy’s personal best swim is now the 4th-fastest time in the 15-16 age group, putting himself ahead of Caeleb Dressel and just four-tenths off Ryan Hoffer’s NAG of 42.67.

More Day 5 Winners

  • 14-year-old Michaela Mattes of Sarasota YMCA won the women’s 1650 free, chopping 20 seconds off her seed with a 16:21.06. That is now the 27th-fastest time in the 13-14 age group.
  • Eclipsing his own 1650 free meet record was Hickory YMCA’s Ross Dant. His winning time of 14:46.20 is now the 12th-fastest time in the 17-18 age group.
  • Megan Glass of Blue Ash YMCA swept the butterfly events when she defended her 200 fly title with a 1:57.51. Spartanburg YMCA swimmer Annika McEnroe took second with a 1:58.57.
  • Hannah Ownbey toppled 200 breast champ Charity Pittard in the final of the 100 breast. The Spartanburg YMCA swimmer earned her first win of the meet with a 1:01.97. Boise YMCA’s Pittard settled for second with a 1:02.14.
  • Sweeping the men’s breaststroke events was Somerset Valley YMCA’s Matt Fallon, winning with a 54.00. Last year, Fallon took third nearly a second and a half slower. His time now cracks the top-20 all-time in the 15-16 age group. This is now Fallon’s third win of the meet with his 200 breast and 400 IM wins.
  • In a tight race for the title in the women’s 400 medley relay, the Sarasota YMCA relay made up ground on the last 2 exchanges to just tail behind Des Moines YMCA and Red Bank YMCA. However, Des Moines YMCA’s 1:02.27 breaststroker Mary Martin propelled the team to hold off Sarasota YMCA for second. Red Bank YMCA’s Grace Kayal propelled the relay with a 55.51 back lead-off to win the event in a 3:43.83.
  • In his final YMCA national swim, Brendan Burns excelled his Upper Main Line YMCA relay with his 46.69 fly split to a 4-second lead. His blistering split gave room for Matthew Hopkins to bring it home and hold off 100 free national record-holder Jack Alexy from Somerset Hills YMCA, winning in a 3:19.49.

Also, your post with the team scores does not include the miles. No fault to you on that one. They still aren’t uploaded to meet mobile by the Y folks.
