The Brazilian swimming federation (CBDA) has greatly softened its stance on Olympic and World Championship qualifying with its eye toward the home-games in Rio in 2016, according to Blog do Coach.
In 2015, for the World Championships, the Brazilian Federation will take the top two swimmers from the two qualifying meets that meet the FINA “A” standard (seen in full below).
Things will become even more lenient for the Olympic Games, where the CBDA will follow the full limitations allowed for by FINA/the IOC. In other words, they will take two swimmers who meet the FINA “A” standard if two do, and if none do they will take one that meets the “B” standard.
While FINA and the IOC aren’t expected to release those standards until December of this year, the message is clear for Brazilian swimmers: be the fastest in your event, and you’re in to the Olympics.
The qualifying meets for the World Championships will be the Open Championships in Rio later this year and next year’s Maria Lenk Trophy. The qualifying meets for the Olympics will be the Open Championships in 2015, the spring Maria Lenk Trophy in 2016, and the 2015 World Championships.
SwimSwam’s Brazilian swimming analyst D’Artagnan Dias says that the CBDA likes to use the 8th-place position from the prior World Championships as their qualifying standard historically. He says, however, that this system is likely an attempt by the CBDA to shed their “motivation by faster standards” methodology and instead focus on letting its top athletes take a more measured and controlled approach to Olympic preparations.
