The Bonnies Launch 2014-15 Season with Fast Swims

WOMEN

St. Bonaventure women’s swim team kicked off their 2014-15 season Saturday at the WNY invitational. This marks the first meet under first year head coach Krista Carlson.

The Bonnies had 2 first-place finishers in the Western New York Invitational on Saturday. Those event winners for the Bonnies were Tanja Kirmse in the 200 fly (2:08.41), and also in the 200 freestyle (1:55.38), and freshman Devon McFadden in the 100 backstroke (1:00.94).

St. Bonaventure also had multiple runner-up finishes. In the 200 medley relay the team of Devon McFadden, Emily Wulff, Elizabeth Malone, and Rachel Bull placed second with a time of (1:51.92). Devon McFadden placed second in the 200 I.M. (2:14.50), Elizabeth Malone in the 200 butterfly (2:09.10), Adelyn Graf in the 200 backstroke (2:10.36), Tanja Kirmse in the 400 I.M. (4:36.64)

Next Up: The Bonnies’ next meet will be Oct. 18 when the host Colgate at the Reilly Center pool.

MEN

It was a positive start to the season for the St. Bonaventure men’s swim team, as they won 8 of the 15 events at the Western New York Invitational at the Alumni Arena Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. The Bonnies competed against swimmers from Niagara and the University at Buffalo in the meet.

The season-opening meet did not have any team scores.

Event winners for the Bonnies were junior Michael White in the 200 I.M. (1:55.42), and 400 I.M. (4:03.88), senior Matt Rochna in the 200 fly (1:53.11), and also the 100 fly (51:36) junior Michael Pilyugin in the 200 freestyle (1:43.55), and 100 backstroke (52:37), and junior Gregg Byrne in the 1,000 free (9:59.25)

St. Bonaventure also had three swimmers record runner-up finishes. Matthew Goettler was second in the 100 breastroke (59.09), Gregg Byrne in the 200 backstroke (1:58.81), and 1,000 freestyle (9:59.25), and Michael Pilyugin in the 100 freestyle (47.48), St. Bonaventure also finished second in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Pilyugan, Ripley Danner, White, and Matt Taccard (1:26.94) .

Next Up: The Bonnies’ next competition will be Oct. 18 when the host Colgate at the Reilly Center pool.
