Bob Bowman, the head men’s coach for the 2016 US Olympic team and Arizona State University, accepted a board of directors position with the World Swimming Coaches Association (WSCA) effective immediately.
According to WSCA executive director John Leonard, USA’s first-place rankings at the World Championships gives the United States three positions on the board.
Both Leonard and current president George Block are Americans, therefore the third position was given to Bowman.
“It is a delight to have a new board member of the experience and achievement of Bob Bowman join the WSCA board of directors,” Leonard said. “Our thanks to him for accepting the position.”
Bowman has gained notoriety over the years for being the long-time coach of Michael Phelps. Bowman began coaching him just before his 12th birthday, and has since coached him to become the greatest Olympian of all time.
Bowman’s success hasn’t just been with Phelps, he’s coached several other Olympians to success in the pool including Olympic gold medallist Allison Schmitt.
Bowman created a hub for high performance swimmers at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, coached at the collegiate level in Michigan, most recently has started developing a program at Arizona State University, and has now been named to four Olympic teams as a coach.
Very nice. Well done.
