After breaking it in the prelims, Denmark’s Pernille Blume broke the women’s 100 free national record once again in the prelims in a time of 52.99. In the morning she clocked 53.13, cracking Jeanette Ottesen‘s mark of 53.35 set at the Olympics last summer.
Blume, the 2016 Olympic champ in the 50 free, has become a serious medal threat in this event after placing 11th in Rio. She won the first semi-final over defending champ Bronte Campbell and co-Olympic champ Penny Oleksiak, and advances 4th overall to the final.
Sarah Sjostrom leads the way in 52.44, and Americans Simone Manuel (52.69) and Mallory Comerford (52.85) sit 2nd and 3rd.
The 23-year-old has now lowered her best time three times this year in the 100, and is a leading candidate for silver in the 50 free later on behind Sjostrom.
