Thomas Ceccon is the talent from Vicenza who loves details and has a continuous desire to experiment.

At just 16 years old, he was considered one of the youngsters to focus on for the future of Italian swimming.

IMer in the juniores period, he loved to experiment and challenge himself on different strokes and distances.

2017

2017 was the year of both national and international explosion for Ceccon.

Already a star at Italian SCM Junior National Championship in March, he jumped into the elite championships.

At the 2017 Youth Criteria he won six titles:

  •  200 IM (1’56″59 championship record)
  • 100m breaststroke (1’01″60)
  • 100m backstroke (52″63 championship  record)
  • 400m IM (4’15″99 championship record)
  • 100m free (48″72 championship record)
  • 200m free (1’47″74)

At the European Youth Olympic Festival in the same year won:

  • gold medal  men’s 200m IM
  • silver medali: men’s 400m free relay; mixed 400m free relay;
  • Bronzo medal:  men’s 100m free, mixed 400m medley relay

In the same year he set a new World Junior Record with the Italian men’s 400m medley relay

The first senior national team for Thomas Ceccon comes in 2017 at the European SCM Swimming Championship in Copenhagen.

During the 2018 Italian National Championship Ceccon won his first national title in men’s 100m back and men’s 200m IM setting new age group record in both the events.

European Junior Championships 2018 – Helsinki

Busy summer for Thomas Ceccon. It starts in July in Helsinki for the European Junior Championships.

He wins the silver medal with the 4×100 freestyle relay and the bronze with the men’s 4x100m medley.

2018 LCM European Championships – Glasgow

In the men’s 100-meter backstroke final Thomas Ceccon finishes fifth, but his time of 53.85 represents his new personal best, an Italian Junior Record.

2018 YOUTH Olympic Games

Thomas Ceccon at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, held in Buenos Aires, confirmed his talent and versatility.

Ceccon set his new personal best, winning the bronze medal in men’100 100m back with a time of 53.65. He also won silver medal in men’s 200m IM  with a time of 2:01.29.

Thanks to his split, the Italian national team brings home the bronze medal in the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay.

On the fourth day of events, a Youth Olympic gold medal also came for Thomas Ceccon.

In the semifinals of the 50-meter freestyle, Ceccon had swam his personal best, entering the final with the third fastest time, 22.57.

In the final he managed to touch 4 hundredths of a second ahead of Daniil Markov stopping the time at 22.33 and winning his first Youth Olympic gold.

In the 50-meter backstroke event, however, Thomas Ceccon had instead entered the final with a time of 25.94 (fourth time). In the finals he managed to lower his time by nearly 7 tenths, touching a hundredth of a second ahead of Hvas Tomoe. With 25.27 Ceccon adds a silver medal to the four he has already won.

2019 Italian Elite Championships.

During the Unipol Sai Italian Elite Swimming Championships, held in Riccione in April 2019, he set a new Junior Italian Record in the 100-meter backstroke, with a time of 53.60. Time that allowed him to qualify for the FINA World Championships in Gwangju.

Ten days later, at the Eindhoven Swim Cup 2019, Thomas Ceccon  lowered the Italian Junior Record in the men’s 50-meter backstroke, with a time of 25.16.

 2019 European Junior Championships- Kazan

In Kazan, Thomas Ceccon won gold medal in the men’s 100-meter backstroke with a time of 54.13.

2019 World Junior Championships – Budapest

Thomas Ceccon wins his first Junior World medal in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 53.46, setting a new Championships Record.

He lowers his own record set the day before in 54.07.

In the 50-meter butterfly Thomas Ceccon won gold, two hundredths ahead of Russian Andrei Minakov.

Ceccon, after winning the world youth title in the 100-meter backstroke, also takes gold in the 50-meter butterfly with a time of 23.37, PB  and Junior Italian Record.

2019/2020

The 2019/2020 season was characterized by the postponement and/or cancellation of national and international events due to COVID-19 pandemic.

August 2020 saw the Italian Elite Swimming Championships/Settecolli Trophy, where Thomas Ceccon won the Italian title in the 50-meter butterfly and the gold with a time of 23.29. The time is his all-time personal best, but it is also the new Cadet Italian Record. Ceccon set the previous record on 8/24/2019 in Budapest and it was 23.37.

THOMAS CECCON QUALIFIES FOR HIS FIRST OLYMPICS

At the Italian Open Championships held in Riccione in December 2020, Thomas Ceccon sealed the Italian Record in the 100-meter backstroke and secured his spot for his first Olympics.

With a time of 52.84 Ceccon sets a new national Italian record  erasing the previous one set by Simone Sabbioni during the 2016 Italian Elite Swimming Championships. The old Italian record was 53.34.  In Riccione, Ceccon swam under 53 seconds for the first time in his career. The previous personal best was 53.40, swam in August 2020 at the Trofeo Settecolli.

At the European Championships, held in Budapest in May 2021, Thomas Ceccon won three bronze medals:

MEN’S 100 meter backstroke

In the 100-meter backstroke, Thomas Ceccon comes close to the Olympic podium. In the final of the men’s 100-meter backstroke at the Tokyo Olympics, he finished in fourth place and lowered his own Italian record with a time of 52.30.

MEN’S 4X100-METER FREESTYLE RELAY.

With a time of 3:10.11, the four sprinters Alessandro Miressi, Thomas Ceccon, Lorenzo Zazzeri and Manuel Frigo enter the history of Italian swimming and win a historic silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.  Ceccon’s split time of 47.45

MEN’S 4X100-METER MEDLEY RELAY

Thomas Ceccon’s second silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics came with the men’s 4×100-meter medley relay.

On the podium, the Italian men’s 4×100 mixed medley relay climbed the Olympic podium for the first time in history. With a time of 3:29.17, Italy swam a new national record and were third behind USA, at the World record, and Great Britain European record. Thomas Ceccon opens the relay with the backstroke leg in 52.52.

2021/2022 SEASON

Thomas Ceccon’s 2021/2022 season begins with participation in the third season of the International Swimming League, with the Aquacenturions team.

At the European Short Course Championships held in Kazan, Russia, in November 2021, he won:

  • silver medal in the 200 IM freestyle in 1’52″49
  • silver medal in men’s 4×50 freestyle in 1’22″92: Alessandro Miressi 21″20, Thomas Ceccon 20″82, Lorenzo Zazzeri 20″24, Marco Orsi 20″66
  • bronze medal in the 50 butterfly in 22″24

At the World Short Course Championships, held in December 2021 in Abu Dhabi, Ceccon won:

  • silver medal with the men’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay team Alessandro Miressi, Thomas Ceccon, Leonardo Deplano and Lorenzo Zazzeri, 3:03.61 Italian Record
  • bronze medal in men’s 100m IM 51.40

FINA 2022 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – BUDAPEST

Thomas Ceccon on the opening day of the World Championships in Budapest set the Italian record in the men’s 50-meter butterfly during the qualifying heats. A few hours later, in the semifinals, he lowered it.

Before the start of these World Championships, the Italian record had remained unchanged for almost nine years. The old record had been swum by Piero Codia during the 2013 edition of the FINA World Championships, in 23.21.

In Budapest, Ceccon became the first Italian in history to break the 23-second barrier, closing the qualifying heats in 22.88.

In the semifinals, he dropped another 11 hundredths, going into the finals with the second fastest entry time, 22.79.

Thomas Ceccon set the World Record in the men’s 100-meter backstroke. With a time of 51.60 Ceccon demolished the previous record that American Ryan Murphy swam  at the 2016 Olympics in 51.85 and became the first man in Italian history to break the 52-second barrier in the event.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS ROME 2022

GOLD MEDAL 50-METER BUTTERFLY

After the Italian record set at the World Championships in Budapest, Thomas Ceccon starts the 50-meter butterfly at the European Championships in Rome with 23.38 in the qualifying heats and 23.14 in the semifinals, the third time of the finals.

In the final with a time of 22.89 Thomas Ceccon won gold medal ahead France’s Maxime Grousset, and Diogo Matos Ribiero

GOLD MEDAL 100-METER BACKSTROKE

Amid the deafening roar of the Foro Italico, Thomas Ceccon won his second gold medal. The world record-holder also wins at home, after the rainbow gold that surprised (but only partly), Thomas shows up in Rome with the headlights on and wins a very tight event by 3 hundredths over the Greek Apostolos Christou who had denied him success only a few days ago on the dry pool. 52.21 for gold versus 52.24 for silver.

SCM WORLD SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022 – MELBOURNE

Ceccon ended 2022 with an impressive performance at the World Short Course Championships. Not only did he win another individual world title in the 100m IM, but he also set another world record with the men’s 4×100 freestyle relay.

Ceccon proved to be a true all-around performer in three different strokes, making him one of the few swimmers in the world who can boast this characteristic.

In total, in 2022 Ceccon won 15 medals in major international meets and set six national records.

His 2022 performance earned him SwimSwam’s “male breakout swimmer of the year” award.

2023 WORLD swimming CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2023 World Championships begin for Ceccon with a silver medal along with the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. Thomas Ceccon anchors the relay with a time of 47.03.

On the second day of events he won the gold medal in the men’s 50-meter butterfly.

With a time of 22.68, he is the first Italian World Champion in the men’s 50-meter butterfly and lowers the national record. It is also the first Italian gold in swimming at these World Championships.

In the men’s 100-meter backstroke final, after swimming the fastest time in the semifinals, Ceccon finished second, behind American Ryan Murphy. Murphy won gold medal with a time of 52..22, Ceccon touched the wall just 0.05 seconds later, taking the silver in 52.27.

THOMAS CECCON QUALIFIES FOR HIS SECOND OLYMPICS

On the second day of 2023 Italian Championships, held in Riccione between 28th and 30th November, Thomas Ceccon qualified for his second olympics in the 100m backstrock. Thomas, who holds the world record (51.60) in this event, set in June 2022, is one of the italian swimmers who managed to qualify early in November.

During the 60th Settecolli Trophy, in June 2024, he announced that he will add t his Olympic program the double distance, the 200m backstroke, thanks to his time swum in Athens during the World Cup 2023, where he realized the second Italian performance all-time (1:56.49).

2024 PARIS OLYMPIC GAMES

In the first night of competition at 2024 Paris Olympic Games Italy’s men’s 400m freestyle relay won bronze medal. Italians were in the back half of the race after the first 100 meters with Alessandro Miressi swimming 48.04. Thomas Ceccon (47.44), Paolo Bonin Conte (48.16), and Manuel Frigo (47.06) combined with Miressi to earn bronze, returning to the podium after a silver in Tokyo.

During the Day 3 finals, Thomas Ceccon swam to a gold in the men’s 100 backstroke, in a swim that was redemption from the 2023 World Championships when he won silver and from 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, when he finish 4th.

It was as tight of a race, seeing the the whole heat bunched up practically from start to finish. Ceccon had the fastest 2nd 50 split in the field by far, roaring home in a stunning 26.90.

It was China’s Xu Jiayu who got out the fastest, splitting 24.88 on the opening 50m, which was the only 1st 50 under 25 seconds. He was the fastest in semifinals last night, where he clocked a 52.02 to earn the top seed for this race. He was off that time tonight, but he still earned the silver medal with a 52.32.

American Ryan Murphy earned the bronze medal with a 52.39.
