Abbott was a member of the United States Junior National Team as a junior world champion and junior US national champion in open water events.

Abbott finished as the runnerup in the 1500 freestyle at the FINA Junior Worlds.

2016-17

Abbott finished fourth in the 1650 freestyle at the USA Winter Nationals with a 15:03.43, the fourth-fastest time in Tennessee program history. Collegiately, he finished seventh in the 1650 freestyle at the SEC Championships (14:55.41) and placed 13th in the 500 freestyle (4:18.96) and 36th in the 200 butterfly (1:48.85). Abbott qualified for the NCAA Championships, where he finished 27th in the 1650 free (15:00.75) and 39th in the 500 free (4:20.78).

2017-18

Abbott placed 11th in the 1650 freestyle (14:55.96), 16th in the 500 freestyle (4:19.80) and 28th in the 200 butterfly (1:47.73) at the SEC Championships.

2018 U.S. National Championships

Abbott finished 37th in the 1500 freestyle (15:45.13) and 58th in the 400 freestyle (3:57.78) at the Phillips 66 National Championships.
