Michael Houlie is a competitive swimmer who represents South Africa internationally. On January 29, 2018, he announced his verbal intent to swim at Tennessee.

2018-19
At the NCAA Championships, Houlie finished 23rd in the 100 breast (52.64) and was a member of Tennessee’s sixth place 200 medley relay and 16th place 400 medley relay teams.
At the SEC Championships, Houlie was seventh in the 100 breast (52.64), 23rd in the 200 breast (1:58.56) and 53rd in the 50 free (24.14). He was a part of the Vols’ runnerup 200 medley relay and fifth place 400 medley relay.
National/International Competition
2018 Youth Olympic Games (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Houlie set the 50 breast and 100 breast records at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October 2018. He was the 50 breast champion, clocking a 27.51.
In the 100 breast, Houlie swam a 1:00.23 in the semifinals, before finishing fifth in the finals (1:01.70). He set the 50 breast record along the way, swimming a 27.51 in the opening 50 of the prelims, and lowering it to 27.44 in the semifinals.
2019 World University Games (Napoli, Italy)
At the World University Games in July 2019, Houlie set a meet record in the 50 breaststroke (26.82) in the semifinals, before placing second behind Kirill Prigoda in the event finals.
Houlie also set a meet record (26.98) in the preliminary heats, besting Italy’s Andrea Toniato‘s record of 27.06, set in 2015.
