Gabriel Santos is a Brazilian sprint freestyle specialist, Olympian and World Championship medalist.
2016 Olympic Games
Santos made his Olympic debut in front of a home crowd in Rio. He competed in the 400 meter freestyle relay alongside Marcelo Chierighini, Nicolas Oliveira and Jaoa de Lucca. The Brazilian quartet combined in 3:13.21 to place fifth in the final.
2017 World Championships
At the Brazilian World Championship trials, Santos had a stunning swim to punch his ticket to Budapest. On his 21st birthday he won gold in the 100 meter freestyle in 48.11 which was the third fastest time so far in 2017.
In Budapest Santos was a member of the Brazilian 400 meter freestyle relay which made history. Santos combined with Marcelo Chierighini, Cesar Cielo and Bruno Fratus to take the silver medal, which was the highest medal a Brazilian team has ever won in that event. Santos swam the lead off leg in 48.30 then his teammates combined to bring the Brazilians home in 3:10.34.
2018 Pan Pacific Championships
On day 2, Santos swam prelims of the 100 free, and swam in the B-final at night, finishing 4th in the heat (49.24). On day 3, Santos led off Brazil’s 4×100 free relay (48.93) that finished 2nd to USA, but ultimately wound up winning the gold after USA was DQ’ed for swimming in the wrong order.
