Béryl Gastaldello lowered her own French National Record in the women’s 50 meter backstroke on Saturday at the Paris-Chartres stop of the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2015. Gastaldello, who is attached to Cercle des Nageurs de Marseille (CNM) eclipsed her old mark by .01 with 28.01 in the final of the women’s 50m back in Chartres.
Gastaldello first set the mark at the 2015 French Elite Nationals in Limoges on April 3 when she won the national title with 28.10. She lowered it to 28.02 in the heats of the FINA World Championships in Kazan earlier this month, qualifying seventh for semi-finals. Her semi-final swim of 28.30 left her in 12th place and without an appearance in finals, however.
In Chartres on Saturday Gastaldello had a strong morning swim, going 28.03 in heats. In finals she came back with 28.01, lowering her two-week-old record by .01. Gastaldello picked up the bronze medal in Chartres, behind Natalie Coughlin (27.65) and Emily Seebohm (27.74).
Gastaldello was a freshman at Texas A&M during the 2014-15 season, where she set school records in the 50 yard free (21.76) and 100 yard fly (50.87). She also notched the team’s fastest 100 yard free (47.59) and 100 yard back (51.73) of the season, and had the second-fastest 50 yard backstroke leadoff leg (25.05) on A&M’s medley relays.
Gastaldello grabbed the attention of American swim fans when she swam one of the fastest 50 yard butterfly relay splits ever recorded. Although she hasn’t yet been as impressive in long course meters, she is beginning to blossom as a one-lap sprinter in the 50-meter pool. She currently trains under Steve Bultman at Texas A&M and helped contribute to their second place finish at the SEC Championships and their fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships.
