On the second day of the Budapest Open Hungarian Peter Bernek took the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:56.79 breaking into the world’s top five rankings.
Bernek finds himself in the same position in the world rankings as he finished the 2013 short course season in. The Hungarian posted the fifth ranked short course time of 1:50.43 at the European Short Course Championships, finishing second to Radoslaw Kawecki of Poland.
Bernek was not particularly happy with his performance, “The last fifty has not been very good, so I did not go the way I wanted – even here there is still room for improvement at the European Championship.”
Laszlo Cseh took the men’s 100 butterfly in a time of 52.44, which puts him ninth in the world rankings. The time was a season’s best for Cseh who had recorded a 52.58 in February.
“Technically, there is still room for improvement but I felt so good in the water,” said Cseh.
David Horvath, who is one of Hungary’s best shots to stand on the top of the podium at the Youth Olympics this summer ,won the men’s 100 breaststroke in a lifetime best time of 1:02.49. Horvath, who is stronger in the 200 meter distance won a silver in that distance at the 2013 World Junior Championships.
