Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain had an incredible first evening of competition in Doha breaking the world record in both the women’s 200 butterfly and 400 IM collecting two gold medals which makes Spain the top ranked nation in the medal standings after day one.
South Africa claimed the only other individual gold with Chad le Clos‘ win in the men’s 200 freestyle.
The French men won the 4 x 100 freestyle relay while the Dutch women brought home gold in the women’s 4 x 200 freestyle.
There were four countries that won multiple medals which included Spain, Russia, Hungary and the United States.
There were only five medal events this evening. After tomorrow’s night’s finals we should get a better picture of where each country stands as there will be hardware given out in 10 events.
