ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Barton men’s and women’s swimming teams opened the 2020-21 season with a sweep of Catawba Saturday afternoon at Harrison Family YMCA. The Bulldogs’ men’s squad won by a score of 175-79 while the women’s team came through with a dominant victory over the Indians, 185-51.

In the men’s competition, Barton was led by freshman Josiah Beasley (Erwin, N.C.) and sophomore All-American Bartlomiej Swiderski (Warsaw, POLAND). Beasley finished first in the 100-yard (48.42) and 200-yard freestyle (1:46.03) events while Swiderski won the 100-yard (51.78) and 200-yard (1:56.14) backstrokes as well as the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.45).

In addition, Beasley was part of both relay victories for the Bulldogs: the 200-yard medley (1:37.11) and the 400-yard freestyle (3:16.02).

On the women’s side, a quartet of Bulldogs – sophomore Moria Euker (Fredericksburg, Va.) and freshmen Emme Ham (Plantation, Fla.), Marie-Eve Hebert (Quebec, CANADA) and Alexis Lakey (Silver Spring, Md.) – all won two events.

Euker took the 100-yard (1:00.89) and 200-yard (2:11.23) backstrokes while Ham finished first in the 100-yard (1:11.37) and 200-yard (2:32.77) breaststrokes. Meanwhile, Hebert touched the finish line first in the 200-yard (1:59.44) and 500-yard (5:30.88) freestyle events and Lakey took home first-place honors in the 100-yard (1:01.26) and 200-yard (2:17.21) butterfly. Lakey’s time in the 200 butterfly was a new Barton varsity record.

Barton – which won 13 of the 14 women’s events – also placed first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:52.66) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:40.82). Sophomore Carrington Clack (Garner, N.C.) competed in both events and won the 100-yard freestyle event with a time of 54.89 seconds for the Bulldogs as well.

The Barton men’s and women’s swimming squads return to the pool on Saturday, November 14, to take on Chowan in a dual meet in Murfreesboro, N.C., beginning at 1:00 p.m.
