Senior Samantha Baron and junior Jaime Chen each won three events as Newport won Washington’s 4A state girls title.

Their individual wins came back-to-back coming out of the diving break. Baron, a future UCLA Bruin, dominated the 100 fly in 54.00. The next-closest finisher was 1.7 seconds back, and Baron built most of that lead in a blazing 24.7 front half. In the very next event, Chen went 50.12 to win the 100 free. With that swim, Chen was within half a second of the Class 4A state record (49.73) and Washington overall state records (49.60).

The two combined to help Newport win both free relays. Gracie Wang, Alexi Barashkoff, Chen and Baron went 1:36.30 to win the 200 free relay, and Baron, Amalia Girotto, Sandy Li and Chen were 3:28.66 to win the 400.

Jackson junior Mia Chang won two individual races. She was 1:59.71 in the 200 IM, besting Baron by just two tenths. Both women were only about a second and a half off the state record there. Chang would return to win the 100 back in 54.54, taking the field by 1.7 seconds.

Catherine Yu, a sophomore out of Redmond, won the 100 breast in 1:01.61. That was another close record shave, as the 4A and overall records stand at 1:01.33. The time was a drop of six tenths of a second for the 15-year-old Yu.

Other event winners:

  • Kamiak senior Elli Straume won the 200 free. She was 1:50.96. Straume is committed to swim at Arizona State next fall.
  • Issaquah’s Isabelle Huynh won the 50 free in a touchout of Wenatchee’s Rae Ann Dressel, 23.63 to 23.77.
