Backstroker Bethany Garcia To Stay In-State With San Diego For 2024-2025

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Bethany Garcia has announced her commitment to further her education and swimming career at the University of San Diego, beginning this upcoming fall. Garcia is a native of Corona, California, where she attends Jserra Catholic High School and trains with the Mission Viejo Nadadores.

“I am so blessed and excited to finally announce my commitment to further my academic and athletic careers at University of San Diego! Thank you to my family, friends, and coaches for their endless support. All glory to God! #GOTORREROS”

Garcia is a backstroke specialist, and currently owns a Futures qualifying time in the 100 back. She recently represented her high school at the CIF State Championship, where she clocked a 59.40 en route to a 36th place finish overall. She also delivered a lead-off split of 27.49 on her team’s 200 medley relay, which took 20th overall.

Garcia punched her ticket to the CIF State Championship at the CIF-SS Division 1 Championship. She finished 10th in the 100 back, where she stopped the clock at 56.85. The swim marked Garcia’s first time under the 57-second barrier, taking about two tenths off her previous best that she set at this meet in 2023.

This spring she also raced at Speedo Sectionals in Carlsbad. Her highest placing event of the meet was the 400m IM, which she finished 31st in with a season best time of 5:27.75. She also notched season bests in the 100m fly (1:08.39), 100m back (1:11.70), and 200m back (2:35.39).

Top SCY Times

  • 50 back – 26.50
  • 100 back – 56.85
  • 200 back – 2:07.34
  • 100 fly – 57.35

The Toreros earned 9th as a team at the 2024 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships. Garcia is in a good position to score at the conference level next spring, as her current best time in the 100 back would have been just one spot out of the B-final at this year’s meet.

Sasha Ganem posted the team’s highest finish in the event at 12th (56.72), while Milan Bever joined her in finals as the 24th place finisher (58.07). Both Ganem and Bever are rising sophomores, giving Garcia the chance to train with them for three seasons.

With her commitment, Garcia joins  Catherine Dueck, Mallory Paine, Ava Craig, Sophia Hurd, and Olivia Anfinson in the Toreros’ class of 2028.
