Azura Florida Breaststroker Raiz Tjon-A-Joe Commits to Texas A&M

Raiz Tjon-A-Joe, a senior at Westlake Preparatory School in Davie, Florida, has made a commitment to swim for Texas A&M University next fall. Tjon-A-Joe is the Florida state high school record-holder in the 100 breast, having set it with 54.64 in prelims at the 2015 FHSAA Class 1A Championships in November. Tjon-A-Joe went on to finish second in the event but he won the 50 free with 20.26 (although he went 20.10 in prelims).

Tjon-A-Joe who came to the United States from Suriname three years ago, swims for Azura Florida in club competition. He is a Summer Juniors qualifier or better in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 breast, and 100 fly. His best times include:

  SCY LCM
50 free 19.94 23.75
100 free 44.03 52.07
50 breast 25.82 29.72
100 breast 54.45 1:06.92
50 fly 22.65 26.16
100 fly 50.62 56.62

Tjon-A-Joe’s times would have qualified him for the C finals of the 50/100 free and 100 breast at last year’s SEC Championhips. Tjon-A-Joe’s commitment to A&M is a big coup for the Aggies as he is one of Florida’s top recruits from the class of 2016. One might have expected that the appointment of Jason Calanog to the Aggies’ staff last summer would begin to yield an increased number of recruits from the Sunshine State. Calanog was a senior assistant coach at The Bolles School in Jacksonville from 2007 through June 2015. It looks like this is starting to play out.

Other members of the Texas A&M class of 2020 will include:
