Auburn releases schedule, highlighted by duals with Florida, Texas and home SEC Championships

The Auburn Tigers have released their 2014-2015 schedule, headlined by home duals against national powers Florida and Texas.

That dual with intense SEC rival Florida will happen on January 24th, as we reported earlier this week. Those two programs have pretty well ruled the SEC on the men’s side for the past two decades.

Another team that was in contention for the most recent men’s NCAA title will come to town in the Texas Longhorns, complete with new butterfly recruit Joseph Schooling out of Florida. Auburn-Texas will happen just a few weeks earlier on January 9th.

There are a couple big road meets in what’s a pretty loaded schedule for duals. Auburn will head to Bloomington, Indiana early in the season to take on the Hoosiers, headlined by their burgeoning sprint group. That meet happens October 10th, and should be the official opener for the team, besides their “lake swim,” which happens in September.

The women swim Notre Dame and Vanderbilt, getting a glimpse at American record-holding breaststroker Emma Reaney of the Irish. That tri meet happens on October 18th in Auburn, a week after their “War Eagle Invite,” a 3-day meet in early October.

Probably the most exciting road matchup is a triangular in Tuscaloosa, where they’ll face Alabama and Tennessee. The Auburn-Alabama rivalry hasn’t amounted to much for awhile now in swimming, but after the Crimson Tide put together a breakout season and has a top-tier sprinter of its own (Greece’s Kristian Gkolomeev), things are starting to flare back up on the in-state front. Auburn, long known for sprinting prowess, has an exciting young sprinter too in Kyle Darmody, who should match up well with Gkolomeev, the defending NCAA co-champion.

The mid-season invite will be in Georgia, hosted by the Bulldogs on December 5-7. That will offer the women’s team a chance to face defending NCAA champs Georgia in their home pool as the ‘Dogs look for a third-straight national title.

One week after Florida in January, both men and women will dual Missouri, a still-recent SEC addition. The teams will then host the SEC Championships, with Florida returning to the Auburn pool along with the rest of the tough Southeastern Conference. The team has Florida’s Last Chance Meet listed on its schedule, meaning only select athletes who want to improve their NCAA selection chances will likely attend.
