A+ Meet

SwimSwam’s hanging this meet’s report card up on the fridge, thanks to some speedy swimming from Midwest age groupers.

The A+ meet, held February 4-6 in Brown Deer, Wisconsin, featured the Evanston, Illinois-based NASA Wildcat Aquatics at the top of the team scores with 367.50 points. Aquajets Swim Team, from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, came in second with 334.50 points, and Wisconsin-based Elmbrook Swim Club finished out the podium with 285.50 points.

There were also a number of meet records. In the open meet, Kaelyn Gridley, 17, with the Wildcats beat the 200 breast meet record by .35 with her time of 2:10.25. Gridley beat current Minnesota senior Haley Spencer’s time of 2:10.55, set in 2014. EBSC’s Campbell Stoll, 16, also earned the meet record in the 100 fly with her time of 53.16, beating current ASU swimmer Ruby Martin’s 53.27 from 2018. In addition, Stoll also won the 200 fly (1:58.52).

In the 13-14 meet, John Paul Brostowitz with SSTY broke the 100 back meet record with his time of 51.65, defeating Andrew Lin’s 2018 time of 52.29.

Schroeder YMCA’s Maggie Dickinson, 11, took everyone to school, earning her first YMCA National cut in the 100 back as the lead leg in the 11-12 girls 400 medley relay with her time of 59.05. The relay came in third overall with a time of 4:20.24, though Dickinson had the fastest backstroke split in the field.

In the 13-14 age group, SSTY’s Alana Berlin swam a Futures cut in the 50 free (23.58) and 200 back (1:59.86). Avery Luedke also earned Futures cuts in the 500 free (4:58.56) and 100 back (56.96).

There were three double event winners in the open meet. Lucy Thomas with EBSC won the 50 free in 22.78 (Summer juniors cut, personal best) and the 100 breast in 59.89 (Summer nationals, personal best), the latter of which is her first time under 1:00. While SwimSwam’s looking forward to spring break, we’re glad these students-erm, athletes-are still performing well.
