For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Catherine Vaughan of Tampa, Florida, has announced her commitment to swim and study at Arizona State University. Vaughan is wrapping her final year at H.B. Plant High School, and will arrive in Tempe for the upcoming 2023-2024 season.
Vaughan, who trains year-round with Tampa Bay Aquatics, is a sprint freestyle and backstroke specialist. She advanced to finals in both the 100 free and 100 backstroke at the Florida High School State Championships (4A) in November. In the 100 free, she recorded a personal best time of 51.04 in prelims and ended up finishing 5th in finals (51.45). She also set a personal best time in the 100 backstroke, swimming a 57.20 to finish 7th overall.
In December, Vaughan added two more personal best times at the GSC Holiday Classic. She dropped nearly a second in the 200 freestyle (1:52.22), while in the 100 fly she shaved off over a second to hit a 58.25.
Top SCY Times:
- 50 free – 23.65
- 100 freestyle – 51.04
- 200 freestyle – 1:52.22
- 100 backstroke – 57.20
The Sundevils finished 5th at the Pac-12 Championships this past February. They went on to take 27th at the NCAA Division I Championships, led by Lindsay Looney who recorded a 4th place finish in the 200 fly.
Sprint freestyle was on the weaker side for Arizona State this year at Pac-12s, especially in the 50 free. Sophomore Erin Milligan was the only finalist in the event, coming in 22nd with a 22.86. The 100 free was stronger, with freshman Molly Batchelor leading the way with a 10th place finish (48.88). Milligan and freshman Ieva Maluka swam in the C-final, placing 20th (49.46) and 21st (49.66), respectively.
Joining Vaughan in ASU’s incoming class are Sonia Vaishnani, Vivian Wilson, Lia Csulak, Grace Lindberg, Kinley Wigle, and Zhanet Angelova. This class as a whole leans more towards the mid-distance to distance stroke events, making Vaughan the lone sprint freestyler of the group.
