The Netherlands’ Arno Kamminga smashed the Dutch National Record in the prelims of the men’s 50 breaststroke at the opening session of the European Short Course Championships in Glasgow, clocking a blazing 26.03.
Kamminga’s time broke the previous mark of 26.32 set by Ties Elzerman at the International Swim Festival in Germany in October of 2018. Kamminga, 24, set his previous best time at the previous edition of this meet two years in Copenhagen in a time of 26.40, which left him in ninth place and out of the final.
He now owns all six Dutch men’s breaststroke National Records and is tied for 18th all-time in the 50. Kamminga will be in the hunt for his first individual international medal here, as he owns one gold, from the mixed 200 medley relay, from the 2017 version of this meet.
He leads the field heading into the semis, with Denmark’s Tobias Bjerg second in 26.14, Turkey’s Emre Sakci third in 26.18, and pre-race favorites Ilya Shymanovich (26.22) and Fabio Scozzoli (26.23) fourth and fifth.
