Zach Apple earned himself a 2019 Worlds relay spot in the 200 freestyle, avenging a Nationals DQ and bumping Jack Conger off that relay. Meanwhile Zane Grothe passed up Robert Finke for both the Pan Pacs silver medal and the 2019 Worlds spot in the 1500.
Conger is slated to make the Worlds team in the 100 fly. Finke, however, now gets bumped to the World University Games team for 2019.
There were no bumps on the women’s side, as most of the 200 freestylers weren’t able to better their Nationals times. Katie McLaughlin would have jumped into the mix instead of Melanie Margalis had she swum her 1:56.88 prelims time in the B final, but she added about a half-second and won’t make that relay at Worlds.
In addition, Townley Haas took over an individual 200 free entry – he was previously on the team as a relay-only swimmer. Moving into an individual role bumps him off the World University Games team, and shuffles the secondary meet lineups slightly. It should all be reflected in the embedded spreadsheet at the bottom of this page.
Worlds Qualifiers – Day 1 Pan Pacs Events
The following are the top 2 (or top 6 in relay events) based on combined results of Nationals Finals (denoted “Nats”) and Pan Pacs A and B Finals (denoted “Pan Pacs”). Athletes bumped from the team at Pan Pacs are crossed out.
The top 2 in every event earn individual swims at 2019 Worlds. 3rd and 4th in the relay events earn relay swims. 5th and 6th earn prelims relay swims, if roster space allows.

Full projected 2019 Rosters
As we did during Nationals, we’ll continue tracking projected rosters. Be aware that we’re updating these rosters as the meet progresses, so nothing here is official or finalized until the end of the meet. The italicized names are in line for spots based on Nationals results. As athletes lock in their roster spots, we’ll remove the italics from their names and events. Events in (parentheses) remain unofficial, pending Pan Pacs results.
Our embedded spreadsheet sometimes takes a few minutes after publishing to appear correctly on this page, even though we’ve already made the document public. If the sheet says permissions aren’t enabled, wait a few minutes for the embedded document to connect correctly.

“Would be hard for him (Jack Levant) to pull that off, since he’s not on the team” -Brandon Keith
I read the pan ams selection and, based on my understanding, don’t think they select women in the 1500/men in the 800, however you have Hannah Moore selected as making Pan Ams in the 1500.
Pan Ams selection procedures only specify that athletes will be selected in events contested at the Olympics and at Pan Ams. South American media have reported that the men’s 800 and women’s 1500 will be officially added to the 2019 Pan Ams event list after their addition to the 2020 Olympic program. So until we hear otherwise, we’ll project teams (which won’t be officially announced til well after the new events addition is settled) using those events, because they’re pretty widely expected to be included in the program.
Man that’s brutal for Finke .
He’s racing past the top Australian miler, crushing his best time, having the race of his life – and then finishing .3 seconds too late, losing his worlds spot and a pan pacs medal. Gotta be proud of that swim, but the fates can be cruel.
Can’t Conger and McLauglin still swim in the Worlds relay next year, assuming they make the team in one of the fly events? Coach discretion?
They could… but under official selection criteria, they would not be one of the 6 selected in the event. And under the new FINA rules requiring relay-only swimmers to compete, adding Conger/McLaughlin would make it a little trickier (though not impossible) for Team USA to swim all 6 qualifiers plus another coaches’ discretion entry between prelims and finals.
thanks
if Loose is the head coach, and its a coaches discretion decision, there is no way Conger is coming anywhere near the relay.
I know that Margalis, Manuel, LeVant and Apple have won spots as 4×200 Free Relay alternates on the WC team, but isn’t it true that the coaches can choose anybody who makes the team to swim on any relay? If McLaughlin and Conger, for example, make the team in the 100 Fly, can’t they be chosen for the relay in the place of somebody else? In other words, the 4 swimmers listed above have won tickets to the WC meet, but they aren’t necessarily guaranteed a swim in the 4×200, right?
Yeah, you’re correct that McLaughlin and Conger could still be put on the Worlds relay. The only wrinkle is that they aren’t among the 6 officially selected. Any of the 6 who are selected as relay-only swimmers (likely Dwyer, Levant, Apple, Deloof) are required by FINA rules to swim either prelims or finals or the relay is disqualified. So getting Conger onto the relay would require something like Levant/Apple/Conger/??? for prelims and Haas/Seliskar/Pieroni/Dwyer for finals. Not impossible, but USA Swimming may also be wary of swimming too many prelims alternates after missing the A final in the 4×100 relay while swimming alternates at 2015 Worlds.
I appreciate you taking the time to reply, Jared!
How likely is it that a swimmer like LeVant or Apple will decline their spot for Wugs (or Dwyer and Chadwick for PanAms) to stick with one meet on a relay only spot for Worlds?
Very likely. World Championship is where you want to swim next year.
I wouldn’t be so sure. In 2014/2015, 11 swimmers were in that situation and nearly every single one swam both meets: Chelsea Chenault, Lia Neal, Leah Smith, Shannon Vreeland, Abbey Weitzeil, Jimmy Feigen, Reed Malone, Matt McLean, Michael Weiss and Clay Youngquist. Only Margo Geer declined her position in the lower-priority meet.
My guess would be that declining is pretty unlikely for LeVant and Apple, who would get extra events at WUGs (200 fly, 50 free) that they wouldn’t get to swim at Worlds. Same for Chadwick (50 free). Dwyer’s a veteran who’s been on plenty travel trips, so he’s the only one I think would have an outside chance of declining his Pan Ams spot instead of swimming 200 free twice that summer.
Connor Hoppe eligible for World U’s in 100 breast?
Doesn’t appear so, unless he has another year of undergrad beyond his NCAA eligibility. USA Swimming swam a swim-off for the final WUGs spot between Reece Whitley and Ian Finnerty (who finished one spot below Hoppe at Nationals), which would suggest one of them is in instead of Hoppe. It’s possible Hoppe does still have a year of school left (or re-enrolls somewhere to stay WUGs eligible), but it doesn’t appear that way as of now.
The smallest of small notes-if Manuel, Margalis, and Levant are still going to remain in italics, Apple should remain as well. Obviously it’s super unlikely that we get 3+ new qualifiers for worlds for either gender, but I understand why you’re leaving them in that state.
