Anton Chupkov Downs Another World Juniors Meet Record In 200 Breast

After clinching the men’s 100m breaststroke event earlier in the competition, Russia’s Anton Chupkov dominated the 200m distance tonight to bring home another gold.  Chupkov’s time of 2:10.19 tonight was enough to break the meet record yet again, after already having established a 2:10.73 in prelims.  

Chupkov’s swim this evening beat the field by a full second, as Australian Matthew Wilson touched for silver in a time of 2:11.23, further giving Chupkov legit honors as the top junior breaststroker in the world.

Comparison of splits between Chupkov’s prelims/finals swims in Singapore:

Prelims: 30.63, 33.28, 33.18, 33.64 = 2:10.73
Finals: 29.98, 33.32, 33.13, 33.76 = 2:10.19

Chupkov chose to take it out hard, swimming over half a second faster in his first 50 in finals versus his prelims swim. The Russian was the only competitor of the field to go sub-30 in the opening 50, with the next closest being that of Japan’s Ippei Miyamoto’s 30.12.  Chupkov then managed to hang on with similar splitting for the remainder of tonight’s race.

Chupkov will be attempting a full breaststroke sweep with his entry in the 50m race scheduled for tomorrow. But, he’ll have to battle the likes of Great Britain’s Charlie Attwood, Lithuania’s Andrius Sidlauskas, as well as America’s Michael Andrew to stand atop the podium in the sprint.
