Andrew Again Tops Among 13-Year Olds; Off of Best Times in Showcase Prelims

Day 2 of the 2013 Showcase Classic in Clearwater, Florida, started off much the way that day 1 did, with Michael Andrew taking a lot of top seeds.

Thus far, though, no best times on the second day of the meet. He swam a 1:57.31 to be, by five seconds, the best 13-year old in this elite meet.

He wasn’t alone under two minutes, however; NOVA’s David Dixon topped the 14-year olds race in a 1:57.06. NOVA of Virginia has a great 200 butterfly tradition, including putting out swimmers like Emma Nunn and Allison Haulsee over the last two years.

Among other noteworthy results, 11-year old Nicholas Vance put up a 2:11.65. Nobody else even came close in his age group.

Andrew was also the top seed in the 200 IM in 1:53.50, including a very fast 32.33 breaststroke split. That’s still three seconds away from his lifetime best, and with how he swam on Wednesday, expect him to be faster in the evening session. Grant House from the Cincinnati Marlins is the top seed in the 14-year olds group with a 2:00.21, also separating himself on the breaststroke leg.

Another CM swimmer Carson Foster took the top seed in the 200 yard IM for 11-year olds; he’s the swimmer who famously broke Michael Phelps’ 100 fly National Age Group Record earlier this year.

14-year old Nitro swimmer Regan Barney is the star of the women’s side of the meet again so far on Thursday; she took the top seed in the 200 fly in 2:07.46. 13-year old Burkwood Aquatics swimmer Molly Sheffield led the 13-year olds race in 2:08.36.

Those two also led the way in the 200 IM; this time, Barney was the top seed by a larger margin in 2:07.84, and Sheffield was tops among 13-year olds in 2:10.01.
