David Popovici of Romania led the team off in a 47.22, the fastest flat start of the night to put them in the lead at the first exchange. That time was just off his time of a 46.88 that he swam last night to win the European title. His 46.88 marks the #3 performance ever and only 0.08 seconds off of the World Record. Popovici was not the only Romanian with a big split tonight as incoming Princeton freshman Patrick Dinu split a 47.83 on the anchor.
Serbia’s Velimir Stjepanivic had the team in 2nd at the first exchange after swimming a 47.99. Nikola Acin split a 48.64, in the middle of the flying start splits pack, to put the team out in front for the time being.
With a 48.04 flying start, Poland’s Ksawery Masiuk had the 4th fastest flying start split of the night, which put the relay in the lead at the final exchange. Then, Serbia’s Andrej Barna delivered a huge split with a 46.86 putting the team from 5th to 1st even after the first 50. Barna was able to hang on splitting a 21.99 going out and a 24.87 coming home.
Greece captured the bronze after four consistent 48-point splits were good enough for a spot on the podium as they finished just ahead of Croatia who was fueled by a 47.77 flying start from Jere Hribar.

What a fab career Stjepanovic has quietly had btw – I remember watching him win his first Euro Junior title at home in Belgrade well over a decade ago, then a year later watching him explode onto the senior scene with a 1.54 200fl heat at the 2012 Olympics. Dual European Champion (200/400fr) in 2014, now a decade later he has another title with a maiden voyage inside 48s leading his country off.
Bro WHAT – ANOTHER contender emerges! LFG!!
Chris Lindauer at Notre Dame is training two of the worlds fastest 100 freestylers right now, to their peak!
Don’t forget he coached Barna at Louisville as well so he definitely gets credit in a whole lot of development. Couple that with what he has done with Guiliano and his uprising and that’s a picture of one heck of a coach.
Barna is U of Louisville product. Recently 6th at the Worlds 100m free.
Quietly world class freestyler.
Has been training with ND/ Chris Lindauer for all of his Europeans/Olympic prep
I had no idea. Thanks for the info
Not a UofL product, a Lindauer product through and through
Croatia’s Dragoja being posted and seemingly still training with GW despite committing to Alabama in May, anyone know if he decommitted and staying or is the remaining coaching staff just letting him train with them until after the summer?
With a PB of 47.5, he’s one of those guys that if he sneaks into the final at the Olympics could potentially grab a bronze if a couple of guys aren’t at the top of their game. He’s shown he’s capable of hanging with everyone and if he has the swim of his life it could make for a medal.
Keep an eye on him
That Barna / Guiliano training system seems to work wonders
Is he training at Notre Dame?
Yes he was training with ND since about late April
lmaooo seeliger can’t even help himself from completely selling a relay at a Mickey Mouse worlds
