2017 FINA WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – OPEN WATER
- July 15 – July 21
- Lake Balaton, Hungary
- Meet Central
- Full Schedule
As a nation, France came away as the big winners in the open water portion of the 2017 FINA World Championships this week.
France had just 1 gold medal at the FINA World Championships in open water from 1991-2015, and just 5 medals total. In 2017, they doubled their total medals – winning 4 golds and a bronze that leave them now as the 5th-best team in the history of the discipline at open water Worlds.
Aurelie Muller was involved in 3 of those 5 medals. She won the premier 10km event individually for the second-straight edition of the World Championships. She also took silver individually in the 5k, and, no surprise, France won gold in the team event as well.
Also taking 3 medals was Ana Marcela Cunha – she won bronze in the 5k and 10k (tie), and was the solo winner of the 25k.
That brings Cunha to 9 career open water medals at the FINA World Aquatics Championships – 3 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze. That ties her with Dutch legend Edith van Dijk for the most ever by a woman. Van Dijk had the exact same tally (3 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze) from 1998-2005. Van Dijk has 15 FINA World titles in open water if the FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships, held from 2000-2010.
See below the final 2017 medals table, the all-time medals table from the FINA World Aquatics Championships, and the medalists results from this year’s championships.
