Amy Tang unleashed a trio of personal best times competing at the Husky Invitational in Federal Way over the weekend, including a standout performance in the short course 100 freestyle.
The 16-year-old blasted a time of 48.34 to lead the prelims of the event, topping the previous pool record of 49.33 set by Sara Platzer back in 2001. The performance also moved Tang into 10th all-time in the girls’ 15-16 age group, bumping Missy Franklin (48.38) out of the top-10.
Previously, Tang sat in a tie for 56th with Paige Hetrick in 49.17, while her lifetime best of 49.04 has her ranked 8th all-time in the 13-14 age group.

Tang followed up by winning the long course final in 55.14, four-tenths off her best of 54.71, and she also claimed the women’s 100 fly, scoring bests in both prelims (52.95) and finals (1:00.53). Her short course swim in the heats narrowly missed Dutch Olympic champion Inge de Bruijn‘s pool record of 52.58 from 1999, and put her into a tie for 40th in the 15-16 age group.
Surely those times don’t win Pac 12s, so how can they be pool records?
Not surprising. She had a great 53.94 split in the 4X100 free relay final at last world juniors.
A sprint star in the making.
I have had the fortune of seeing Amy a lot at the pool when she does training with Megan Quann Jendrick. She is VERY impressive!! And always smiling! I have used her as an example to my daughter who is always very excited to watch her practice!
