Alshammar Pulls Out of World Championships Due to a Back Injury

Swedish swimming star Therese Alshammar has to pull out of the 2015 World Championships in Kazan due to a back injury. Kazan would have been the 37 year old’s ninth World Championships.

In February while training in Australia it was discovered that Alshammar had herniated discs in her lumbar vertebrae. The injury was manageable until the condition was aggravated while competing in early June.

On the advice of doctors Alshammar has decided to forgo competing in Kazan so she focus on her rehabilitation.

Alshammar, who still holds the world record in the women’s short course 50 butterfly, finished sixth in the 50 butterfly and eighth in the 50 freestyle at the 2014 European Championships and currently ranks 16th in the world in the 50 butterfly.
