Brisbane, Australia’s Calypso Sheridan has signed an NLI to use her final year of NCAA eligibility at the University of Southern California while she pursues a master’s degree at the Viterbi School for Aerospace Engineering in 2021-22.
“After an amazing four years representing Northwestern University, I’m incredibly excited and grateful to announce I will be completing my final year of eligibility and pursuing a masters in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Southern California. A big thank you to Kipp and the rest of the USC crew, as well as my teammates and coaches at NU! Can’t wait to Fight On!”
Sheridan competed for three seasons (2018-2020) at Northwestern University under Jeremy Kipp, who left the Wildcats in May 2020 to become head coach at USC. While at Northwestern, Sheridan was an impact player from day 1, scoring at B1Gs in the 400 IM (7th), 200 breast (9th), and 200 IM (10th) and qualifying for 2018 NCAAs her freshman year in the the 200 breast and 400 IM. In her sophomore season, she set Big Ten and Northwestern program records in the 400 IM at 2019 NCAAs, finishing 4th with 4:01.35. Her junior season was marked by a pair of conference titles at 2020 B1Gs in the 400 IM (4:03.18) and 200 breast (2:06.85), and a runner-up finish in the 200 IM (1:53.13). (The 2020 NCAA Championships were canceled due to COVID-19.)
Sheridan broke Northwestern pool records in the 50 free (22.23), 100 back (52.04), 200 back (1:54.11), 100 fly (52.69), 200 IM (1:56.64), and 400 IM (4:08.76) individually, and as a member of the 200 free, 400 free, 200 medley, and 400 medley relays. She also broke program records in the 100 back (52.04), 200 back (1:52.86)*, 200 breast (2:06.85), 200 IM (1:53.13), and 400 IM (4:01.35).
*record was subsequently broken by another swimmer
Sheridan did compete at Northwestern in 2021, remaining in Australia to train for the year.
Sheridan will be reunited with Coach Kipp on the USC pool deck and will join a women’s team that finished fourth at the 2021 Pac-12 Women’s Swim and Dive Championships. “Calypso is one of the most talented student athletes I have ever worked with,” said Kipp. “When she was admitted to the Viterbi School for Aerospace Engineering I was not surprised, but rather more impressed by her ability and willingness to reach ever further in her personal pursuits. We can’t wait for Calyspo to join the Trojans in Los Angeles as she takes on a new challenge in her career.”

So Calypso followed a known evil Mr. Hyde to SoCal to swim for him at USC? But maybe he’s Dr. Jekyll around elite athletes so Calypso wasn’t bothered. Or maybe elite athletes know what others see as Mr. Hyde is the personality profile of Type A, hard-driving and demanding coaches in all sports. Hasn’t that the same criticism of Ray Looze at Indiana?
Sorry, folks like GoBruinsGo, there’s no story here. You can only imagine conspiracy theories that everything at USC is a scandal.
Instead I see this as the beginning of developments for USC swimming that point to why Kipp was hired by AD Mike Bohn: to recruit and develop elite swimmers who can return USC to… Read more »
Calypso is also joining up with Letitia Transom with whom she trained with in Brisbane for many years. Icing on the cake
In a dramatic twist he will also be fired by AD Mike Bohn. Kipp was not the first choice. He was hired when another candidate passed. From safety hire to safety fire.
Perhaps a better description would be dumpster fire when it comes to the Kip trail. Sounds like an investigation is in order.
Weird stuff…and opens the door for a lot more questions from the USC athletic department about its swim program and leadership. Is this signing considered tampering? When did he start recruiting her to USC? There has got to be a record of contacts. Is the graduate aerospace program two years but she only has one year of eligibility remaining? Is there something funny going on with the money? Does anyone in the PAC12 or NCAA care? All seems a bit too coincidental
Another B1G transfer to keep an eye on, that boy Will Myhre going to Wisconsin.
Throwing it out there, didn’t Calypso train and work more with Megan than Kipp at NW anyway? Southern California closer to home, weathers nicer, great grad program, reunites with her coach in Megan….maybe she doesn’t care with Kipp is there or not
SwimSwam what is going on with the Kipp investigation? Any resolution? I wonder if this will impact Sheridan? USC has an amazing Aerospace Engineering program so I assume not.
It’s interesting no one has mentioned that nearly the entire men’s and women’s USC swim team freshman class was sent home by the school in early January for violating Covid protocols by gathering together for a potluck dinner and meeting in a dorm suite. I wonder if Calypso is picking up some of the scholarship money that’s now available since some of those freshmen aren’t returning and have been conveniently ostracized by Kipp and the staff? You’re a real prize, Kippy Cakes….. to the rest of the PAC-12.
I only know NorthWestern because of some Weathermen rich kid 1960s pseudo anarchist vibes. Perhaps these suspended swimmers should go there & have a sit – in . Good times!
I like it that Calypso is garnering $$$$$$ from some ultra capitalist outfit . She was sometimes on Aust junior teams to fill out the unpopular 200 br & 400 im spots . I used to think she had hippy parents with a name like that, but here she is exploiting Californian fractions & dissent to a tee. I look forward to a Dossier.
Came here for the comments, but need more
She’s joining Kipp’s former team. He won’t be around much longer.
Seems Kip worked well for Calypso . Maybe its the swimmers who are not embracing the incredible opportunity presented as Calypso has .
LOL- just as not enough athletes have embraced the teachings of Patches O’Houlihan
