Belarusian sprinter Aliaksandra Herasimenia tied the European record in the 50 back in tonight’s Budapest final. She clocked a time of 27.23, tying the 2009 European record held by Germany’s Daniela Samulski from 2009.
Samulski posted that time in the suited days, racing in the final of the 2009 World Championships in Rome. In that final, China’s Zhao Jing swam the world record 27.06 that has lasted another year. Additionally, Herasimenia was in that final 8 years ago, placing 5th with a 27.62.
Today, Herasimenia earned the bronze medal in the race behind Etiene Medeiros and Fu Yuanhui. She is the only Belarusian to hold a European record today. Herasimenia earned the 50 free bronze medal in 2016 at the Rio Olympic Games, while she won silvers in both the 50 and 100 free at the 2012 London Games.
Herasimenia is the best Belarusian sprinter ever on the women’s side. She holds national records in the 50 and 100 meter races for freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly. She’ll have another medal shot in the 50 free later this week.
