He’s been setting records left and right– Terrapins Swim Team’s Alexei Sancov, the California-based Moldovan, posted a new national record tonight in the 100 butterfly.
Tying for first with Nitro’s Shaine Casas, Sancov swam a time of 53.24, improving upon his record of 53.90 from this morning’s prelims session. Today is the only day Sancov has ever broken 54 seconds, with both occurrences marking new national records for him.
Sancov split 25.12 on the first 50, then had the fastest back-half of the 100 fly A final in Long Island at 28.12 to finish in 53.24, tying with Casas for the win.
Sancov has had a big summer, having already set a World Junior record as well as committing to swim for the USC Trojans. At the European Jr Championships a month ago, Sancov posted a 1:47.00 in the LCM 200 free, slicing a tenth off of Maxime Rooney’s WJR. Just a few weeks later, Sancov announced a verbal commitment to join the USC Trojans in their class of 2022.
The Moldovan 17-year-old is the favorite to take the 200 free later in this meet– he went 1:49 leading off the 4×200 free relay tonight after his 100 fly win, and he was the only finisher under 50 seconds in the 100 free.
