The girls of Moscow set another European Youth Record to conclude the weekend’s Russian Youth Championships in Saransk. This time, the record fell in the 200 medley relay, where the team of Karina Bordugova, Ulyana Zhdanova, Anastasia Zhuraleva, and Yulia Volkova combined for a 1:49.95.

Of that group, only the anchor Volkova was also a member of the Moscow 200 free relay that set a European Junior Record earlier in the week.

While the race was tight after the backstroke leg, the next 3 swimmers each built the lead by more-than-a-second ahead of Moscow’s “B” relay that finished in 2nd place.

The swim is officially the first European Junior Record in the event, as it clears the 1:50.85 LEN-set ‘benchmark’ time.

The individual highlight of the last 2 days of competition was a 1:43.15 in the boys’ 200 meter free final by 17-year old Alexander Shchegolev from St. Petersburg. His best time in long course is a 1:47.4, and he’s now making a serious push to join the Russian team at the Tokyo Olympic Games (he had no previous official result in the 200 in short course meters).

By FINA points, that 200 free was easily the best swim of the meet, and it was part of a medal-leading effort for Shchegolev: he won 7 golds and 1 silver for 8 total awards. That includes a new Russian Junior Record in the mixed 200 free relay.

The top swim for females was Moscow’s Anastasia Makarova, who swam 1:05.70 in the 100 breaststroke. She broke the Russian Junior Record in the 50 earlier in the meet with a 30.62.
