Albert Lea senior Lindsey Horejsi set a new national high school record at Minnesota’s Class A State Prelims Thursday night, going 58.56 to win the 100 breast.
That’s a drop of exactly one full second from what Horejsi went in winning the event a year ago, and it smashes two tenths of a second off the national high school mark of 58.75 set back in 2009 by Kasey Carlson.
Horejsi is now the owner of both the overall national high school record and the national public school record, both of which were previously held by Carlson, a future All-American at USC.
Thursday’s swim was powered by a huge front half that saw Horejsi go 27.26 over the first 50 yards. That split on its own would already be enough to compete at the NCAA level on a 200 medley relay.
Her full splits:
- 27.26/31.30 – 58.56
We originally ranked Horejsi at #10 in our summer breakdown of the top 20 recruits in the nation, and this swim probably only raises her stock higher.
Horejsi’s swim was done in prelims, which means she has another shot to go after the record at finals. Horejsi is swimming on Albert Lea’s 400 free relay in the very next event, though, so it’s possible the plan was to gun for the record in prelims and coast the final to save up for her relay split. Albert Lea qualified third in the relay, getting a 51.71 anchor leg from Horejsi.
Next season, the senior will get to further her relationship with the pool in which she broke this record: she’s set to become a Minnesota Golden Gopher next year, joining a collegiate program that has produced three different NCAA breaststroke champions (Jill Tyler, Haley Spencer and Kierra Smith) in the past 5 years.
Her + Kierra Smith will be great training duo next year
Oh and she split a 26.25 on the medley relay in finals.
Told you she was “scary” in one of my earlier comments!! Was there yesterday when she broke the record. Very powerful swim! Wouldn’t be surprised she drops a little today at the finals.
Great performance. Congrats.
Her SCY progression in the recent years:
2012. 1.00.16
2013. 59.75
2014. 59.46
2015. 58.56
Swam a new PB in long course last summer in 1.08.99.
