Alabama Secures Verbal Commitment from 2021 Sprinter Kailyn Winter

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Soquel High School junior Kailyn Winter has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Alabama Women’s Swimming and Diving team for the 2021-22 school year. The two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American wrote on social media:

“From California to Sweet-Home Alabama?!! I am elated to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at the University of Alabama! Thank you to my family, coaches, teammates, and friends that have supported me throughout this incredible journey. I am so excited to be part of the Rising Tide!! ROLL TIDE 🔴⚪🐘 #bamaspeed”

Winter is a sprint free and fly specialist who, as a sophomore, was runner-up in the 50 free (23.14) and 100 fly (54.41) at 2019 CIF-Central Coast Section Championships. She had the fastest anchor in the field of 200 free relays (22.24), pulling her team from 6th to 4th. From there, she went on to compete at the California CIF State Championships and finished 5th in the 50 free (22.98) and 5th in the 100 fly (54.21). She also anchored Soquel to 14th in the 200 free relay (22.87).

Winter swims year-round with the club team Quicksilver Swimming. She has Winter Juniors cuts or faster in the 50/100 free and 100 fly. Last summer she placed 8th in the 100 fly at Speedo Junior Nationals. At Santa Clarita Sectionals she came in 3rd in the 50 free and 7th in the 100 fly, earning a best time (1:01.06) in the latter. In December, she went best times in the 50m free (26.22) and 100y fly (54.02) at Winter Juniors West while placing 7th in the 50 free and 13th in the 100 fly.

Winter will be part of an Alabama class of 2025 that also includes Anna Ogren, Kasia Norman, Krista Wheeler, and Sophia Garrison. It took 22.59/49.34 to score in the 50/100 free and 53.77 to get a second swim in the 100 fly at 2020 SEC Championships.

Top SCY times:

  • 50 free – 22.98
  • 100 free – 50.40
  • 100 fly – 54.02
  • 200 fly – 2:02.32

I hope she has a good experience at Alabama. However, as a swim parent I’d have some serious reservations about giving my child my full blessing to attend/swim there under there at this time. Buyer beware.

Oh come on. I was at SECs watching and it looked like Alabama had a great team culture. The kids supported each other just as much as any other team, were swimming way above expectations, and were interacting very positively with all the coaches.

I don’t think a SwimSwam comment section should impact a decision like this, and if it does, that’s a shame that people aren’t taking the time to meet the coaches and team and truly evaluate if it’s a good fit or not. After that meet, I’d have no issue sending my child there to be a part of that team. Congratulations Kailyn!

I don’t think it’s out of line questioning any Alabama decision based on what the coach is accused of doing last season.

Big congratulation Kailyn, Alabama is a fantastic program with a lot of positive momentum right now! Do not let the comments of those with sour grapes and hidden agendas take away from your outstanding achievement.

@Swimpop and @Sccoach, you two have a ton of nerve anonymously questioning the decision of a hs swimmer you don’t even know. Do you think this swimmer and her family did not take great efforts in arriving at this decision? Somehow you know what is best for Kailyn? Haven’t you heard that the Crimson Tide train has left the station? I have an idea, if you had or have a D1 Power Five swimmer please share with everyone what their decision was so all… Read more »

You must be new to sports.

Can tell swimmers are soft because they think they should get all of the adulation and none of the criticism.

I’m not mad, you seem mad. I’m questioning the coach more than anything. No hidden agendas. I’m a swimswam reader who read what the coach was accused of and it didn’t sound good

I have no stake in this game, but this is a kid who probably worked most of her life to swim in college. To come on here and write such a negative comment directed towards a KID is pretty low, especially coming from someone claiming to be a swim parent.

Congratulations to Kailyn. It’s a huge accomplishment to swim at the Division I level. Best of luck.

This Quicksilver team seems pretty good. Alabama commit, Cal commit on the women’s side and a USC commit + Indiana commit on the guy’s side. Very interesting
