The Tide was too strong for the Delta State Statesmen during today’s NCAA season-opening dual meet in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Alabama men’s team won 211-83, while the women’s team won 212-82. Both teams swam exhibition only during their final two events. Alabama’s head coach, Dennis Pursley, was pleased with his teams’ performances. After the meet he commented, “I feel like we were ahead of where were at this meet a year ago, so I was real excited about that.”

The star of the men’s meet was Alabama’s Laurent Bams. Bams, who is only a sophomore, showed some serious early season speed with three individual wins in the 100 Free (43.98), 200 Free (1:36.37), and 100 Fly (47.86). He also swam the lead-off leg of Alabama’s winning 400 Freestyle Relay. Other individual winners for the Crimson Tide include Luke Kaliszak in the 100 Backstroke (47.88), Pavel Romanov in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke (54.98 and and 2:02.22, respectively), and Conor Oslin in the 200 Backstroke (1:49.85).

The Alabama women were without their best breaststroker, Bridget Blood, but they still came away with the win. Junior Temarie Tomley won the 100 and 200 Free (50.49 and 1:49.01, respectively), Mia Nonnenberg won the 1000 Free by over 30 seconds (9:52.57), Katie Kelsoe won the 100 and 200 Backstroke (56.86 and 2:02.16, respectively), Hannah Musser won the 100 and 200 Butterfly (55.44 and 2:02.32, respectively), and Justine Macfarlane won the 100 and 200 Breaststroke (1:04.21 and 2:18.17, respectively). Bailey Scott also had a strong early season swim in the 50 Freestyle (22.92).

The Statesmen had several noteworthy swims against a sharp Division I opponent. Matteo Fraschi had a second place finish in the 100 Breaststroke (55.59) and a third place finish in the 200 Breaststroke (2:03.96), and the men’s 400 Freestyle Relay also secured a third place finish (3:10.94). The Lady Statesmen got on the scoreboard with second place swims by Caroline Jouisse in the 500 and 1000 Free (5:04.93 and 10:23.79, respectively), and another second place finish by Anastasia Klyarovskaya in the 100 Back (57.11).
