The Ajax aquatic club made the trek out to the Arena Pro Swim Series at Orlando this weekend for some fast swimming, and made some waves breaking their own Ontario record in the boys 4x100m medley relay and taking bronze in the process.
The team of Phillip Kay, Ryan Telford, Ryan Kelly, and Javier Acevedo put forth a 3:54.06 to break their previous Ontario record of 3:54.10 set in 2014.
Acevedo was a crucial part of the relay effort, displaying the fastest 100 freestyle split of the field with a 50.32. Earlier that night Acevedo competed in the ‘B’ final of the 100m freestyle finishing 12th behind fellow Canadian Hassan Abdel-Khalik who represented Club Wolverine.
In finals, Acevedo was a 51.46 after rocking a 51.12 to finish ninth overall in the prelims. The 17-year-old was just about four tenths of a second off qualifying for the ‘A’ final. Acevedo also competed in the ‘D’ final of the 50m freestyle earlier in the meet where he swam a time of 23.68. In what can be regarded as his second best performance of the meet he won the 200m freestyle ‘C’ final in 1:52.14.
Breaststroker Ryan Telford also made a final, taking the win in the ‘C’ final of the men’s 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:22.77. Similar to Telford, Ryan Kelly who swam the butterfly leg on the relay, swam a 2:07.31 in the ‘C’ final of the 200m fly.
Phillip Kay who swam the backstroke leg made the ‘D’ final on day one in the 400m IM where he put up a 4:42.89 with a 1:12-mid backstroke split.
The Ajax aquatic club had other swimmers qualifying for finals this weekend. Danika Huizinga was eighth in the 200m IM ‘B’ final. She also qualified to swim in the ‘C’ final of the 100m backstroke which she won in a time of 1:03.75, a time which would have earned her a fourth place finish in the ‘B’ final. In her first event of the meet she finished 14th overall in the women’s 100m fly with a sixth place finish in the ‘B’ final.
Apart from Huizinga, 13-year-old Ajax swimmer Kayla Sanchez made two finals in Orlando. Sanchez finished eighth in the 50m freestyle ‘C’ final and rocked a win in the 200m backstroke ‘D’ final with a 2:22.94.
Ajax broke the NAG record tonight at Canadian Nationals! Congrats boys. They put their money where their mouths are! Its lit.

I guess you don’t understand the true meaning of “Big Cat”.
Let us keep in mind these boys are not tapered or rested in anyway, and one of them is 15 years old (Philip Kay) so yes, dropping 4 seconds by the end of this year is possible, just watch Mike, you will be eating your words.
It will not be “easy” to improve by 4 seconds ‘this year”!

Ajax had a great showing at the meet. I am not sure if Swim Ontario have the records correct. In 2012, the Oakville Aquatic Club set the Canadian record for the 15-17 boys 4x100MR at 3:50.66.
