As the hordes anxiously await mid-season appearances from Katie Ledecky and Jack Conger, another great Northeastern club picked up the first Open-class win of the 2012 Tom Dolan Invitational, hosted by NCAP at the University of Maryland pool (glad to hear they’ve found some use for it).

Asphalt Green’s Isla Hutchinson-Maddox won the girls’ 1650 in 16:29.11, taking the title by more than 25 seconds. The distance freestyles are her best discipline, and after just barely sneaking under the U.S. Open time standard in February, she know has blown by that with this 8-second best time.

In the boys’ pool, Gavin Springer of the home team won in 15:24.83 to also pick up his first ever U.S. Open swim. While that’s a 26-second personal best for the 16-year old, it’s not totally unexpected after a very good summer that saw him drop his long course 400 to a 4:06 and his long course 1500 to a 16:11.

The meet continues this morning in Maryland, with Conger expected to swim the 100 fly and Ledecky the 200 free on Friday. Both swimmers have relatively light schedules for this meet.

Full, live meet results are available here.

The density of great young talents in this part of USA is incredible. Many of them are among the best young Americans.
Will Jack Conger respond to Ryan Murphy? Will Katie Ledecky break some records? We’ll see.
