Adrian Wins 50 Free In Record Time, Video Interview

Men’s 50 Freestyle – 2013 World Championship  Trials – as reported by swimswam editor-in-chief Braden Keith:

A big Cal 1-2 finish came in the men’s 50 free, as Nathan Adrian won in 21.47 to break the Meet Record and jump to the top of the world rankings, atoning for his miss at the Olympic Trials last year. After the race he said the key to not making the mistake again was to “swim faster”. Simple words, wise words.

He will be joined by his teammate Anthony Ervin, who was a 21.70 for 2nd place, and somehow got his hand into the wall ahead of Josh Schneider (21.87) and a tie between Cullen Jones and Jimmy Feigen at 21.88.

That’s an impressive 5 swimmers under 22 seconds in the same race; there’s 17 swimmers who have cleared that barrier worldwide, and almost a third of them now are Americans.

Yes, Nathan is single. He will also smile back at any young woman who smiles at him at the Cal pool.

Agreed. It would be quite difficult to pull off a 21.3 and 47 mid-low in the same meet. We will see… as for the 50, he will face tough competition from Manaudou, Magnusson, Cielo, Ervin, among others. Not to mention The Missile and V1addy in the 100 Free!

I think garcia might pull a big surprise this year.. I saw his last meet and his start and turn were already on par with the others..

Very impressive time by Adrian. He really wants it bad in the 50. Could he go 21.3 or 21.2 in Barcelona?!?!

For win gold.. 21.3 I think will be mandatory.. but how will that affect his 100 free? Can´t see anyone going 21.3 and 47 mid low at the same meet.. if he does.. amazing

Am I the only one surprised that Durden get named on either the World Champ or WUG roster? Kinda disappointed that he’s done wonders for a lot of his top athletes but still hasn’t been named to any big meet rosters.

Why is he not named?
CMIIW, he has three swimmers on the team.

Agree, very odd that the selection process has avoided putting him on a roster.

Josh should NEVER been allowed to swim the 50 after no showing for the 100 B final. He displaced a swimmer that could be using the swim to qualify for Jr Team. Inexcusable-particularly when Josh sat there watching his heat swim fully clothed. He should have been scratched out of his next race.
Not the first time he’s pulled this I might mention. Classless.

USA Swimming scratch rule not in place for Nationals? Or just not in place for the top athletes?

Hans, thanks for commenting on this; I was puzzled and asked about it on a couple different threads and got no reply, at least last time I checked. How could they let this happen?? The first time they cut him slack because he was “new” to swimming and didn’t realize his coach had signed him up for heats of 100 fly, but this time was blatant; he obviously knew the rules. I don’t get it.

Probably not the place to mention it, but a Singaporean 14yo went 22.7 this week….the teens are really smashing some times up. .40 quicker than the Aussie Chalmers.

Darren Lim’s 22.73s was amazing. He also swam 51.25s in the 100m. Probably not as impressive, but still very good swim from someone this young. He sister, Shana Lim is swimming at Arkansas.

As for Adrian’s last comment I hope he is single.

Prediction: after Nathan Adrian has won the 50m free at Worlds, the USA unexpectedly changes its stance on fifties after which they are added in the Olympic schedule. At the 2016 US Olympic Trials the fifties are the first events to be filled. 😉

I almost commented after Adrian’s preliminary swim that there is no significant improvement coming even though he seemed to take it very easily. I’d have been so wrong! What a time. I would go as far as referring him to be a favourite at Worlds.

I am also happy that Ervin got an opportunity for rematch at the world stage. He was very fast at the Olympic final but his miserable start ruined everything. Anthony, isn’t… Read more »
