Adams Hits New 100 BR Trials Cut, Olson Gets Close At NCSA Day 2 Prelims

Munster Swim Club’s Kyle Adams notched a new Olympic Trials cut in the 100 breaststroke to highlight day 2 prelims of the NCSA Junior Nationals.

Adams dropped about six tenths off his best time, going 1:03.26. That’ll squeeze in under the 2020 Olympic Trials cut of 1:03.29. Adams is the top qualifier this morning, but has a few contenders on his tail: Brett Champlin (1:03.48 and chasing a new Trials cut after dropping 1.6 seconds this morning), Tristan Dewitt (1:03.73) and Christopher Mikuta (1:03.75, but 1:03.0 last summer).

Jaden Olson of the Chicago Wolfpack is also on the cusp of a new Trials cut. His 56.70 was the fastest time in prelims of the boys 100 back, and constituted a drop of more than a full second from his previous best. Olson is now only .11 seconds off the Trials cut heading into tonight. Also in the mix is Holden Raffin, who dropped 1.3 seconds this morning and is four tenths off the Trials cut.

In the girls 200 free, a showdown is set up between 800 free champ Rachel Stege and 100 free champ Camille Spink. The 16-year-old Stege is the top qualifier at 2:02.71, for now solidly ahead of Spink’s 2:04.44. The 14-year-old Spink is improving fast, though, after taking nearly a full second off her 100 free best yesterday. Stege may need to be closer to her lifetime-best of 2:02.26 to get the win.

Other top qualifiers:

• Sandpipers of Nevada’s Tyler Edlefsen is the fastest qualifier in the boys 400 IM, going 4:28.95 this morning.
• TNT’s Letitia Sim went 1:11.69 to lead the girls 100 breast by just .04 seconds. Sim has been much fsater, though, (1:09.55 back in June) and could challenge the 1:08.78 meet record tonight.
• 17-year-old Emma Sticklen is the top 200 fly qualifier at 2:14.23. She’s nearly a second ahead of the field despite going about eight tenths slower than her seed time.
