After controversy over North Carolina’s HB2 law led to the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships being pulled from Greensboro during the 2016-17 season, the championship meet will now return to the Greensboro Aquatic Center through 2023.
SwimSwam earlier reported that the NCAA Board of Governors had decided in early April that they would allow championships to be hosted in North Carolina again after the repeal of the state’s controversial HB2 law and replacement with the new HB142 law. The old HB2 law mandated that people use the bathroom or locker room that corresponds to the sex on their birth certificates in all government buildings. The new law, HB142, says that until 2020, government entities are not able to enact rules on bathrooms, showers, or changing rooms until December 1, 2020.
The ACC made an official announcement on Wednesday that contracted league championships for several sports would return to neutral sites in North Carolina.
“We are pleased that ACC neutral site championships will return to the state of North Carolina beginning with the 2017-18 academic year,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “We value all of our partners in North Carolina and appreciate their support and cooperation. We are thrilled to renew our relationships with so many terrific people, outstanding cities and first-class venues.”
The 2018 Women’s ACC Swimming Championships are slated for February 14th-17th, while the Men’s ACC Championships will take place from February 21st-24th.

The ACC needs to look like a conference indifferent to the family P&L of a few 4th & 5th generation Greensboro bred, UNC educated oligarch families.
The ACC is a $300mm a year property, not a locally run Elk’s Club. Get a real independent conference commissioner & start actin like it. Please.
Well, well, here we go again with the NorCarulayna Swofford & Co. good ole boys bad acting. Georgia Tech is arguably the best venue in the country for major swimming events. But the ACC won’t locate swimming championships there because it isn’t a ‘neutral site’?!? Give me a list of everyone who ever said something negative about a Big 12 or NCAA meet in Austin. I’ll wait on that…
The North Carolina state legislature just finished going through the motions to sorta change this tremendously stupid bathroom law by ostensibly pushing discretion down to the counties & municipalities. The change means less than nothing in the Bible Belt rural areas.

Why does Texas get to host the NCAAs and have it as a home meet? Make them travel like everybody else. Who cares about Big 12s. O please.
Because it is a great pool & a great venue for all of the student athletes. Whatever advantage Texas would have is more than offset by the benefit of Jamail for all the athletes. Ditto that for Georgia Tech.
Did Cal not beat Texas last time it was at their pool…?
