Academy Bullets 11-12 girls take down 19-year-old NAG record in 400 medley relay

The Academy Bullets of Illinois broke a nearly two-decade-old National Age Group record, as their 11-12 girls relay went 4:35.97 in the 400 medley relay.

The team of Michaela Herwig, Kelly Sego, Lindsey Merk and Lauren Payton put up that time at the Illinois Age Group State meet over the weekend, taking over a second off the 4:37.22 record held by the 1995 Cincinnati Marlins.

All four girls are 12 years old. Their splits are below. The relay was consistently quick across the board, led especially by the back-end splits from Merk on butterfly and Payton on freestyle:

  • Herwig, backstroke: 1:09.37
  • Sego, breaststroke: 1:17.24
  • Merk, butterfly: 1:06.92
  • Payton, freestyle, 1:02.44

The 400 medley relay took place Sunday night of the Illinois State Meet. Full results are available through Illinois Swimming’s portal on USA Swimming, which you can find here.
