Abbey Weitzeil Swims Pair of 24.61s on Day 2 of Santa Clara LCM Senior Meet

2021 Santa Clara LCM SENIOR 2 T&F MEET

The second finals session of the 2021 Santa Clara LCM Senior 2 T&F Meet featured the women’s and men’s 200 fly, 50 free, 200 breast, and 100 back. Highlighting the session was Olympian Abbey Weitzeil of Cal in the women’s 50 free, who swam a pair of identical times at 24.61.

Winning the women’s 200 fly was Santa Clara’s Abigail Ninan at 2:23.36, touching more than a second ahead of 14-year-old Eunice Lee (2:24.83). On the men’s side, Alto’s Will Macmillan took the top time at 2:02.46, five seconds ahead of 16-year-old Arthur Balva at 2:07.87.

Into the women’s 50 free, Abbey Weitzeil‘s finals time of 24.61 was just off her US No. 4 season time of 24.57 from PSS Mission Viejo. After swimming 25.67 in the morning, Cal’s Katie McLaughlin placed second to Weitzeil at 26.22, both off her season best of 25.31 also from Mission Viejo.

On the men’s side, 17-year-old Gavin Green was just off his AM swim of 24.45 to hit the fastest time of the day at 24.57. TIDE’s John Heindel (24.76) and PASA’s Ethan Harrington (24.90) all finished under 25 seconds for the top three times.

A trio of swimmers broke 2:40 in the women’s 200 breast final, all in the 17&U age group. Taking the win was PEAK 17-year-old Ela Freiman, touching 0.33s ahead of PASA 17-year-old Silvia Faraboschi, 2:38.66 to 2:38.99. PASA 16-year-old Audrey J-Cheng placed third at 2:39.80.

On the men’s side, 18-year-old Charles Stewart dropped 5.89s from prelims to win the final at 2:27.12, touching ahead of Santa Clara’s Andrew Joe (2:28.54) and DACA 15-year-old Gunner Hopkins (2:28.59).

Into the women’s 100 back, Cal’s Ayla Spitz hit 1:02.47 twice today to win the event while DACA 18-year-old Caleb Apodaca won the men’s 100 back at 1:01.64.
