Queen Abbey Weitzeil reigns once again in the pool as she has successfully defended her crown at the annual Cal Poly/Cal Queen & King of the Pool pentathlon. Fellow Cal senior Zheng Quah was crowned the 2019 King of the Pool alongside Weitzeil (read more about King of the Pool here).

Cal sophomore Izzy Ivey kicked the meet off with a strong victory in the 100 fly, clocking in a 54.87. Weitzeil had the next fastest time with a 55.30, followed by Cal junior Robin Neumann.
After the 100 fly, Weitzeil steamrolled through with a consecutive 4-event sweep. Weitzeil’s first victory of the meet was in the 100 back, where she touched in at 55.29. Also hitting the 55-second mark was Cal junior Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou (55.29) and Ivey (55.74).
In the remaining three events, Weitzeil earned her most dominant victories, winning each event by more than a second. Here’s a breakdown of how dominant Weitzeil was in the 100 breast, free, and IM.
Event | First Place | Second Place | Third Place |

Weitzeil’s 4-event streak allowed her to defend her title as Queen of the Pool, clocking in a time of 4:38.76. That time took down Kathleen Baker‘s meet record time of 4:39.54, set in 2017. Finishing in second place was Ivey (4:47.36) and third went to Wilson (4:48.64).
In similar fashion, Weitzeil took 5 seconds off her 2018 winning time to re-claim the title. The major difference in her time drop was the 100 fly, where last year she clocked in a 58.15 with 26.74/31.41 splits.

Additional Notes
Cal sophomore Cassidy Bayer is listed as second on the overall standings, however, is listed as DQ in her 100 breast and 100 IM times. From what her 100 breast time suggests (59.99), it could be an educated guess that she did not perform breaststroke kicks and instead used dolphin kicks as a result of an ongoing knee injury.
Long live the queen! @AbbeyWeitzeil retains her Queen of the Pool title with a record time of 4:38.76. #GoBears https://t.co/aQu9zUMHKB

The Cal women’s next splash in the pool at the Chik-fil-A Invitational at Fresno State, which will take place October 11-12.
So what did Simone open with in the 100 free when she ended her season with the NCAA record?
Her first 100 free swim of the 2016-2017 season, which wasn’t until October 20th, a month later, was 48.00.
Mallory Comerford was actually the early-season leader that year: she swam 47.89 on October 14th, 2016.
One mention of Zheng when he had more impressive times, 46 100 fly and bk in sept is amazing

That freestyle is SPEEDY.
Tough to gauge times this time of year but taking down baker’s record at this meet is no small feat
I bet we see this a lot with top swimmers starting the season in top form because of the Olympic year
I think she’s just fast as f
Hope she gets the second 100 free spot at OT.
at this point, I think I’d put my money on her for that second spot as she seems to be a big game swimmer and seemingly has her mojo back. looking forward to the trials!!
Comerford did not seem so sharp this summer , so i would go with Weitzel or Walsh for that spot
Brown looked good also. Don’t forget Geer as well
I have a feeling Geer will be in contention for that second spot.
I think Walsh and Weitzeil are a step ahead of Brown or Greer but if Abbeys on fire cant see Walsh getting the spot. I think OT will be one year early for Walsh to nab the second individual. Hope so anyway.
48.4 well that escalated
48.4 at this stage of the season?! Wow.
